Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania is located in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and it is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. It was founded by Captain John Forbes in 1792 as a small trading post on the Allegheny River. The town grew rapidly during the nineteenth century, thanks to its natural resources and its location at the confluence of several major rivers. In 1837, Elizabethtown became an incorporated municipality with a population of over 20,000. By 1860, Elizabethtown had become one of the most important cities in central Pennsylvania. During this time, guns were an integral part of many local militias and military forces. One such militia was called "The Johnny Reb" because many residents were farmers who had NRA membership to support their weapons purchases. In 1865, James Buchanan was elected president of the United States and he directed his cabinet to develop new ways to arm Americans for war. The department's first director was General Philip Sheridan and his goal was to purchase 100 million rounds of ammunition for American soldiers by 2020.
