Elizabethtown is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,769 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1792 and named for Elizabeth Montresor, Countess of Huntingdon. In 1815, the town became part of the new Westmoreland County with its own government. On November 15, 1876, it merged with neighboring Parkersburg to form what is now Elizabethtown-Parkersburg Borough. The first settler in Elizabethtown were three men from Northampton County who came overland from Maryland on October 14, 1792. They named their land "Cumberland Heights." Their families had been living there since they left Maryland. The first school in Elizabethtown was built on May 25th, 1793 by Mrs. John Franklin and her husband Mr. John Whitehurst Jr.. The school held classes until 1800 when it moved to a house on Market Street which still stands today as the old Schoolhouse Museum Annexe. In 1815 the town of Elizabethtown passed an act authorizing its own government and within one year the town had a total population of fifty seven residents: twenty four males and twenty four females In 1876 when Parkersburg merged into Westmoreland County, Elizabethtown became part of that county as well making it one of two counties in Pennsylvania (the other being Philadelphia). As part of this merger there were many changes to local governments including changing the name from "Borough" to "borough".
