The town was founded in 1798 as North Elizabeth Township by John Forbes and his wife Sarah Prentice Forbes. In 1809 it became known as Elizabethtown after General Washington's daughter, Elizabeth (1775-1856). The name change was due to community demand for a more honored name than "North Elizabeth." In 1881, the towns of McKeesport and Bethlehem were merged into Elizabethtown. The merger created a new borough that included most of McKeesport's territory withinElizabethtown borders. The first school in the town was built in 1814 on land donated by David Taylor. It became known as Grove School and continued operation until 1865 when it burned down due to an arson attempt by students. A new school was built on the same site and opened in 1866. It is now called Park School which has been operated since 1984 unaffiliated with any other educational institution or municipality

The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location on a major trade route between Philadelphia and New York City. In 1824, Elizabethtown became a city under United States jurisdiction. The city population reached 100,000 by 1828. During the late 19th century, Elizabethtown experienced rapid growth as new businesses were established andeducated people moved into the town fromPhiladelphia and other cities across America.
The town of Elizabethtown was founded in 1798 by George Washington and his wife, Catherine the Great. It was named for Queen Elizabeth II of England, who had visited America in 1785. The town's first settler was John Armstrong. It became a borough in 1834. In 1906, the borough merged with nearby Reading to form the new city of Reading.
