Elizabethtown is an incorporated town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Erie–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, Elizabethtown had a total area of , all of it land. The first ammunition store in Elizabethtown opened in 1868 and was run by Elisha Cook. Cook was also the owner of one of the first breweries in western Pennsylvania. Ammunition production started in 1875 and soon became a major industry in Elizabethtown. In 1899, John Jarratt established Mid-Atlantic Ammunition & Provision Company to produce rifle bullets and artillery rounds for use by the U.S Army during World War I. By 1916, Mid-Atlantic Ammunition had become one of America's leading ammunition manufacturers with its own manufacturing plant on Main Street east of town. At this time, there were over 100 businesses supplying ammo to soldiers throughout eastern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio during World War I During World War II, munitions production returned to Elizabethtown as president Harry Sinkovich decided that Ammo could no longer compete with Japanese swordmakers who were producing shorter calibers for their rifles at much lower prices than American ammunition companies such as Winchester and Remington could provide for their customerseleven years after America entered World War II . Ammo Production resumed at Mid- Atlantic Ammunition after Victory through 1945 until it closed its doors in 1978 due to economic reasons . However A&P continued operations until 1984 before folding into GPI (Gunsport Industries) which still manufactures ammo today In 1919 Jimmy Kapp set up his own store called "Kapp's Gun Shop" on North Main Street west of town which lasted until 1951 when he sold it to Laddie Wiegand who operated it until 1986 when it closed againdue to lack of business AMMO HISTORY IN ELIZABETHSTOWN: The earliest evidence we have documenting ammunition production dates back to 1868 when Elisha Cook opened his own store selling shotgun shells direct from Europe without any local competition! This early history can be traced back even further as James Kapp set up shop next door at 'Kapp’s Gun Shop' running right alongside Jimmy Kapp's successful operation since 1951! Elizabethtown is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Elizabethtown is home to the Elizabethtown Chiefs football team and the Elizabethtown Blue Raiders baseball team. The first Europeans to explore what is now Lackawanna County were French traders who passed through in 1683. They named this area "Haute Noire" (high land). In 1718, Englishman John Armstrong settled here with his family and began trading goods with the Indians. In 1768, he married Susanna White of Lancaster County and naming their new settlement "Eliabethstown". In 1824, Robert Stephenson built a railroad from Scranton to Harper's Ferry and founded Elizabethtown as one of its stations. The town became an important industrial center during the turn of the century because it produced coal, oil shale and other minerals for local industries such as blast furnaces and machine shops. The towns post office was established in 1827; however, it did not operate until 1892 when it moved from Lancaster to Elizabethtown under mail order operation by George Wirtz Sr.. The town seal was designed by Augustus Saint Vincent Nebeker in 1903. During World War I (1914–18), many military veterans returned toElizabethtown after being discharged from service in Europe. Many businesses were started or enlarged by these soldiers including JT Sanger Supply Co., which still operates today out of a building that once housed Nebeker's Seal Shop on Main Street. After World War II (1945–1946), large numbers of Polish Americans came toElizabethtown due to wartime restrictions on immigration quotas set by President Harry Truman’s America First Policy Congress that year%. These Poles formed several churches and social clubs as well as starting businesses such as Pabst Brewery & Bottle Workshops Inc., Eastern Gas Transmission Company Ltd., Glass Rubber Workshops Inc., etc.; among them were JT Sanger Supply Co., which continues operations today unchanged since its creation more than 60 years ago! When Commonwealth Consolidated Edison Company purchased control over all electric power sources within Lackawanna County on May 1st 1954 from Philadelphia Elecric Light & Power Company (PELCo) - formerly Reading Electric Railway - existing rates continued unchanged while customer service/new equipment was installed; however post office services were discontinued effective July 1st 1954 due market forces having already been contracted by PELCo for future ELIEControl services providing overnight delivery of electricity via truckloads intransitantly throughout PA without regard to customers residences or business locations! A new ELIEControl building at 601 Elm St./Route 8 opened September 9th 1951 following completion of $2 million project funded by $500 per day state gas tax levied upon residents thereof while supplies lasted; however following acquisition by Penn Central Transportation Corporation on October 15th 1960 transportation services within ELIECTown reverted backbonus style facilities/facilities provided with 50% discounts off current rates applied equally regardless depts served thereby maintaining open access refrigerator production currently subsidized annually thru government program administered thru DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION - notice preceding facility construction indicating program goals including elimination Of late night long distance commuting trips utilizing public transportation
