Elizabethtown is a small town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Elizabethtown is named after the Elizabethtownsite, an early settler's camp on the Monongahela River that became a post office in 1790. The first European settlers to arrive in this region were those from Scotland who arrived in 1753 and built Fort Pitt on what is now known as Brown Street. The next year, James Watt founded the City of Pittsburgh and land including present-day Elizabethtown was given to him by Governor John Forbes in recognition for his engineering work on behalf of Pittsburgh. In 1814, Scotsman Alexander Hamilton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land southwest of Elizabethtown from Adam Crain for $3,000 and began development called "Hamilton Township". At this time there were only about 100 people living within these boundaries; however, over time many more families moved into and aroundElizabethtown due to its fertile soil and proximity to natural resources such as coal mines and forests. In 1847 when Pennsylvanian James Buchanan took office as President of the United States he appointed Major General George Armstrong Custer to lead American Indian Wars against Sitting Bull's National Sioux Tribe in northern Kansas Territory which included much of today's Oklahoma.
