In 1887, an inventor by the name of George Westinghouse filed a patent for the use of electricity to stun animals. In 1888, his invention was patented again and this time it was for a device that could be used as a weapon. It was in 1889 that Westinghouse created the first electric taser and this weapon became known as the "Walking Wound" device. The Walking Wound is still in use today and is considered to be one of the most effective weapons against animals. The community took its name from John Easton, an Englishman who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention that created the United States of America. Easton is a town in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from an Indian word meaning "hidden place." The first European settler in what is now Easton was Nicholas Pennoyer who arrived in 1798. He built a cabin on the east side of present day Easton Township and named it Pennoyer's Mills after his friend Nicholas Pennoyer, Sr., who had earlier settled nearby. In 1802, John Fenton purchased acres of land northwest of present day Easton and founded the village of Cumberland for himself and others around this time. In 1825, Isaac Morse moved to what is now Easton from Bloomfield Township and started to build a sawmill on the west side of township road 2 south of present day Griggs Road. This mill became known as Morse's Mills after him. By 1830, there were 10 mills in Northeast Pennsylvania with 6 located inambers county alone (now all gone). In 1832-33 James Woodruff started building a gristmill on east side ofpresentdayGriggs Road between Elmira and Huntingdon Roads which became known as Griggs Mill after James WOODRUFF; also by 1830 there were 11 mills in northeast Pennsylvania with 7 located inambers county alone (now all gone). In 1840, settlers Jonathan Green and Abram Merrill bought 640 acres north of current day Easton from William HUGHES for $5 per acre; this area would later become part of milepost 127 on US 16 near Lansdale (today' Westmoreland Borough). They began to plant trees on their land which yielded fruit that they sold to local farmers until 1848 when they developed their own farmstead which still stands today withineastontownship boundaries today. On December 8th 1800 Isaac Morse Jr along with 1 other man plus 4 boys over 12 years old left Bloomfield Township headingNorthwest on PA Route 9 towards Chambersburg then crossed intoumberland County where he found coal seams being mined by anthracite miners named Ebenezer Beers(later spelled Beers) early February 1800 just inside PHILADELPHIA COUNTY LINE about 3 miles due NorthWestof present dayEastON Twp while camping out overnight under pine treesISAC MORSE JR SETTLED IN THIS AREA AND CALLED IT EASTON WITH HIS FIRST FAMILY AFTER ENTERING INTO A BUSINESS FOR FARMER JOANETTE WILLIAMS IN WILLIAMSBURG TO SALE THEIR FERTILIZER MACHINEcalled THE BEGINNING OF HIS OWN RETAILGRADE FARMERS MARKET HERE ON EASTON ROAD EARLY MAY 1800 .
