In that time, Easton has developed into an educational and business center for the surrounding area. The modern scopes were invented in the early 18th century by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother, Nicolas Conte. The first scopes used achromatic lenses which allowed for a much more perfect view of objects than could be achieved with earlier types of microscopes. In 1795, British astronomer Joseph Banks designed and built the world's first reflecting telescope, which he used to observe Venus. In 1825, Englishman John Herschel developed a new type of microscope using an objective lens and white light instead of black light to viewing stars and planets. This new instrument was known as the "Herschel Telescope". By 1830, all major amateur observatories had been founded including those in Paris (the Musée d'Orsay), London (the Royal Observatory), and Berlin (the Königshaus). With this increase in astronomical activity, it became necessary to provide better observing facilities. In 1841, Nicholas-Jacques Conte constructed the Observatoire royal de France at Meudon south of Paris. This institution provided excellent observing facilities for decades until they were destroyed by fire in 1966. During World War II, many German scientists were captured or killed while working on astronomical research projects so their equipment and data was lost forever.
