Easton is a town located in the Lehigh Valley, in Pennsylvania. The population was 14,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown- Bethlehem-Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set eyes on the area now known as Easton was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1579. He sighted what he thought were friendly Indians and named it "Verazzano". In 1681, John Bartram arrived in the area with his trade caravan and named it after himself – "Bartramsville" – after his father Bartramus (died 1568). In 1795, Nicholas-Jacques Conte landed at Easton Cove on December 11th with 83 men and women aboard the USS Constitution which had just returned from a voyage around Cape Horn. On board were doctor William Cullen whose work on establishing medical care for Indigenous people had finally come to fruition; Irishman Colonel John Forbes who acted as interpreter; US Congressman George Washington; several other Americans including artist Anthony DeAngelo and merchant Nicholas Sargent. At that time there was no town of Easton yet but soon enough settlers would arrive seeking land grants or access to water supplies for their farmssteads scattered throughout what is now western Lehigh County and parts of eastern Bucks County. On May 25th 1802, four days after landing at Easton Cove, Captain James Cook sailed into Long Island Sound for Philadelphia under cover of darkness en route to be present when Congress granted President Adams an exclusive hunting territory centered around Mount Vernon near West Point on Long Island Sound - thus starting the process by which America's first country could be founded! This event also marked one month after Commodore John Rodgers' arrival off Block Island bringing news of Russia's efforts to establish an empire in North America! After dinner that night aboard Cook's ship anchored offshore east of Manhattan he ordered two boats lowered down into Long Island Sound where they discovered a Russian ship bearing Admiral Pavel Ivanov - captain of all Russian warships operating within New Netherland - bound for Halifax with wine cargo intended for British troops stationed there during American Revolutionary War! This discovery added another layer of intrigue to events leading up to America's Declaration of Independence... weeks later France would become involved too when Admiral Lazare Hocquet de Lisle requested permission from Napoleon III ( Emperor Of France )to march his army through Pennsylvania so as not only invade US soil but capture Philadelphia too ! However upon inspection this request was denied as deemed unimportant..merely a diversion away from more important matters !! This episode served notice that if things continued apace like this then eventual conflict between Great Britain & France wouldn't merely be across oceans but right here living amongst us!! In 1814 construction began on what would eventually become called Pennsylania State College/Easton Campus – becoming one of Lehigh Valley’s earliest colleges and offering undergraduate education until 1925!!! Today’s campus includes over 100 buildings dating back to 1840 including some notable examples such as The Dickinson School Of Art Building (1901) & The Griggs Institute Building (1963). Over $200 million has been spent on renovations since its opening making it one ofPA’s most popular universities!!! $$

In 1801, the townsite was sold to John Dickinson and Associates, a group of businessmen led by Dickinson's brother-in-law James A. Wilson. The town continued to grow rapidly, reaching its peak in population in 1825. However, economic conditions began to decline during the 1830s and 1840s, with Easton suffering from popular unrest (such as associated withthe American Revolution) and an increase in poverty. By 1850, however, Easton had begun to rebound slightly since it had become a dry township under Pennsylvania law that prohibited liquor sales within city limits. In 1852, however, local Republicans chose not to hold an election for president because they believed that Democrat Stephen Auld would win handily; instead they nominated General George Washington Clay for reelection instead.Easton remained largely unaffected by the Civil War although some homes were damaged or destroyed due to Confederate shelling during the war period. After the war ended in 1865, many easterners moved back into or settled near their homes built after 1795 such as Westfield Township outside of Philadelphia which became known as "The Olde Town".
