In 1881, Easton became home to its first schools, and by 1907 it had become one of the largest cities in Pennsylvania with over 100,000 residents. The city's economy has since diversified into sectors including information technology and transportation services; real estate; manufacturing; agriculture; and tourism. In 1795, Benjamin Logan founded a small post office here known as Logan's Ferry on the Susquehanna River. The community grew steadily over the next few decades until it reached its peak around 1800 when there were over 1,500 residents. With new transportation options available and growth coming from industry such as lumbering and shipbuilding, however, Easton began to decline by 1810. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many soldiers of Company C of Third United States Infantry fought here including General George Armstrong Custer who lost his life during an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Delaware River under cover of darkness on July 25th 1865 while leading his regiment through Easton intoPennsylvania; this event is celebrated annually as Confederate Memorial Day in Easton. Slowly but surely though, commerce began to pick up again with factories opening up along the Susquehanna River which led to even more growth until 1875 when Census results showed that there were just 604 residents still living here – an all time low! But like so many things in America during this time period – good times followed by hard times; eventually growth resumed thanks largely to immigration from Europe and other parts of North America which has continued to define Easton ever since. Easton is one of nine towns in Butler County and is included within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first reference to Easton appears in 1795 when it was called "Eaton" by John Forbes during his survey of Butler County. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army encampment was located near what is now Easton and east of what is now Monroeville. In 1828, Andrew Mellon donated land to create Westmoreland Township in Butler County and Easton became part of that township. In 1916, Easton became the county seat for Butler County after being designated as such by Act No. 274 of the State Legislature which took effect July 1, 1916. At that time, there were only six other towns in Butler County: Westmoreland Township (now Lawrenceburg), White Oak Township (now Monroe), Northumberland Township (now Bedford), Crawford Township (now Farrell), South Park Township (now Greenfield) and Uniontown Borough (later an independent borough). The outbreak of World War I interrupted development in Butler County and no new construction was done until after the war when a number of businesses were established including a munitions plant at present day Conshohocken Mills which produced ammunition for both World War I and World War II. After World War II ended, many factories closed down while others merged or changed their names as they transitioned from wartime production to peacetime operations. Today, there are several local businesses that continue manufacturing items like fireworks or food products but much activity takes place online with more than 250 locally owned companies with sales totaling over $1 billion annually statewide
