In 1836, the first binoculars were invented in Easton, Pennsylvania. The inventor was George Washington Smith and his brother James. They had been working on a new type of telescope at their home when they came up with the idea to make binoculars. Their first examples were made out of glass. In 1838, they released a set of three glasses each with a 30-inch focal length and 100 millimeters objective lens. These glasses were known as the “Smith Glasses” and sold for $1 per pair. By 1840, Smith had produced over 1,000 pairs of these glasses. The early days of binoculars were difficult because there wasn’t much information available about them other than what was printed in patents or published by symposia. However, through trial and error, Smith managed to create an efficient design that worked well. He also applied for two U.S patent applications that would later be granted – one for an improved lens system and another for a detachable eyepiece housing (the latter patent remains in effect to this day). Binoculars continued to be developed during the late 1800s and into the 1900s until they became increasingly popular among farmers and hunters who needed better vision while hunting game or surveying landscapes. The first Europeans to visit Easton were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on October 15, 1492, when they charted the course of the Delaware River from Philadelphia to New York City. In 1764 John Thomson founded a farm here named Thomson's Mills after himself and his father-in-law. Easton was incorporated as a borough in 1810. The name "Easton" originated with Ebenezer Eaton who settled here about 1800. By 1860, east of the Monongahela River there were only 2 buildings left standing in what was then an agricultural village of over 5500 people. In 1871 Eastern Railroad constructed a line through town from Allentown to Bethlehem which eventually became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad network. The arrival of this railroad changed everything; businesses began opening up and residents started moving into new houses and businesses along its tracks. Today, many downtown businesses remain open long after their original occupants have passed away or moved away; some dating back to before incorporation date! There are also several large grocery stores (including Giant Supermarket), pharmacies ( such as Rite Aid), banks ( including First National Bank), and other small businesses that make Easton one of the most vibrant communities in Lehigh County!

The community was founded in 1827 by three brothers from Lancaster County: Andrew, Levi and John Easton. They named their new settlement for George Washington's home county, Virginia. With its location on the Susquehanna River between Chester and Yorktown counties and its close proximity to Philadelphia, Easton quickly became an important commercial center in southeastern Pennsylvania. In 1835, it boasted a blacksmith shop, bookstore and physician as well as two churches - First Baptist Church (founded in 1824) and Presbyterian Church (founded in 1829). Easton also became known for its production of cheese and applesauce. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Easton sided with the Union side but later joined the Confederate States of America (CSA). In 1865, after Union General Robert Ewell failed to capture Richmond during his Raid on that city – one of the largest military operations ever mounted against any single city – many residents fled to Philadelphia to escapeEwell's troops. However, many others chose to stay behind because of economic reasons such as lack of food or transportation available outside ofPhiladelphia. By 1870, only 2% of Easton's residents were black while 95% were white; however this diversity dissipated over time due to assimilation into local society throughout much of northeastern Pennsylvania In 1916], Mayor Atherton unveiled a $5 million dollar bond issue which financed major projects such as an expressway connecting eastbound I-680 with westbound I-95;Library expansion including a large art wing along South Street;and installation of cast iron water pipes beneath Main Street leading upriver to Allentown In 1967], Eastern Steel Works closed its doors after more than 130 years manufacturing steel products in Easton Today there are various businesses that operate within the boundaries of what once was called "JohnEastons' Town". These businesses include: PNC Banknorthwest Huntington Branch located across from High School; Midcoast Pizza located behind The Olde Hickory Inn & Restaurant on Northampton Avenue; numerous other small businesses dotting every corner within walking distance from each other . There are also several parks within walking distance including First Presbyterian Church Park (), Second Presbyterian Church Park (), Bishop Gorman Recreation Area () and Westmoreland Hills Elementary School (). Furthermore there is now an ongoing renovation project being undertaken at all 3 aforementioned Parks which should complete by Fall 2020
