East Stroudsburg is a city in Solon Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 73,521 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Pennsylvania and fifth-largest city in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. East Stroudsburg was founded by colonists from West Chester, Pennsylvania on November 3, 1799. The first settler to arrive in what is now East Stroudsburg was James Wilson who built a cabin on Pole Road in 1811. In 1814, Methodists from Bethlehem founded First Baptist Church there. The first school was established in 1815 and classes were held for free until 1828 when charges were instituted for tuition. In 1850 the town passed a charter making it an municipal corporation with a Mayor and Six Aldermen. In 1870 John Sutter came to East Stroudsburg and started the Sutter Manufacturing Company which manufactured Levi's jeans and other clothing items during that time period In 1896 Wm Hite opened his grocery store at 419 South Third Street which became one of the largest grocery stores east of Interstate 95 . That same year also saw construction of the first high school building which still stands today (now known as Wright High School). Additionally, East Stroudsburg got its nickname "The Birthplace of Pennsylvanian Football" due to its importance during that time period with teams playing their home games at Ebenezer Field on Palmer Avenue (later renamed Beaver Stadium)
