The name "East Stroudsburg" is derived from the word "estreich," meaning "broad and fertile." East Stroudsburg was founded in 1754 by settlers from Germany who named it after their home city of Strasbourg. The community grew rapidly due to its position as an rail junction and its location on a route between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The town was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1795, and named after Sir George Easton of Liverpool who donated land to the town. In 1800, John Adams established a post office here. In 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant's army burned down part of the erected wooden courthouse here while retreating from Gettysburg during the American Civil War. East Stroudsburg continued to thrive as a small agricultural community until World War II when its economy plummeted as factories closed around the nation due to wartime production shortages. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and America entered World War II with full participation, Lever Brothers chemists moved their operations from Philadelphia to East Stroudsburg for war production needs alone and this led to an economic rebound for East Stroudsburg which reached its peak in 1951 with over $100 million in total sales statewide. However, following industrial decline throughout much of North America during the late 20th century and into the 21st century, East Stroudburg's economy has gradually begun to crumble again although some new businesses have started up since then including manufacturing of electric vehicles or "car-sharing." However overall there has been little significant progress made since 2001 despite repeated efforts by local officials including Mayor Rich Krieger and Township Administrator Don Wehner
