The Shamokin School District served East Stroudsburg from 1829 to 1954 and now serves as part of the Lackawanna Valley School District. In 1829, Nicholas Snyders Jr., a German-born tailor, opened a store in what is now East Stroudsburg on Main Street. His store was one of the first stores in this area. He married Anna Elizabeth Piska who also came to this area from Germany in 1829. They had six children: Nicholas Sr., John Jr., Nicholas III (nicknamed Tim), Anna Catharine (née Stricker), Jacob Stricker (Jacob Stricker?), and Susannah Jane (née Weiser). Nicholas Sr.'s son John Sr.'s Store became known as "John's Place." In 1881, John's Place was destroyed by fire; however, his son Jacob Stricker rebuilt it and continued to operate it until 1912 when he sold it to Jens Petersen who ran a grocery store there for many years until he died in 1973. That same year, another store built on top of John's Place burned down; however, not long after that building caught fire again and failed to escape with any damage but did cause some property damage before finally being torn down in 1984 due to concerns over safety concerns only two years later! This latest rebuild of EastStroudsburg's only surviving grocery store took less than two months! In 1870 Isaac Trottier established a post office here with mail service coming daily except Sundays which were handled by Samuel Murchison who operated an agency further north at Broomhall during that time period. From about 1890 until about 1920 when World War I interrupted mail service east of PittsburghMQT], mail arrived here twice weekly via wagon drawn carts! One can wonder how much more rapid email delivery would have been possible had these days not been cut off during those hostilities! In 1910 James Bannister opened an L&P grocery store adjacent to his father-in-law Edward Fenton's shoe factory located on Clinton Street just south of downtown East Stroudsburg proper - one block west of where Market Street meets Clinton Street today...Bannister became successful enough so that he started his own departmental stores throughout northeastern PA including one opening in Erie PA shortly afterwards...In 1957 Bannister donated land along Clinton Boulevard southward from downtown eastward towards Erie for the erection of University Park High School - still standing today as one of eastern PA’s most beautiful high school campuses! Today Eastern PA has several interesting places named after its pioneer settlers such as: "Nicholas Snyders Jr./SNYDERS STORE", "James Bannister/L&P Grocery Store", "Isaac Trottier/University Park High School" and "Jens Petersen/Market Square Shopping Center". There are also streets running through or near towns named after early settlers like: Courtland Avenue (later renamed Eggenberger Avenue), Clinton Boulevard (now called Chambersburg Boulevard), David Streets (later renamed Steuben Street), Adam Streets (later renamed Alexander Streets) etc..
