Gun targets, or "target pistols", have been a popular pastime and target shooting practice in East Stroudsburg since the early 1800s. Many of the original guns used to fire these devices were muzzleloaders, which allowed for much more accurate firing than simple firearms. Target pistols typically consist of a metal frame with an adjustable barrel that is attached to a wooden stock. The attacker fires at the target from close range, and often causes serious damage or injury to the object being shot at. The first documented use of target pistols in East Stroudsburg was on October 18, 1796, when Captain John Smith and his menfired six shots at a small granite block off South Main Street. This was the first time that firearms were used in East Stroudsburg as a means of exchanging gunfire with local Indians. By 1810, there were several businesses in town that offered target pistols to customers who desired an experience similar to what they had experienced while hunting by rifle. These businesses included: The Arsenal Store (now known as The Rifle Shop), The Pistol House (later known as The Gunsmith Shop), and John Broughton's Sporting Goods store. Target pistols continued to be popular during the 19th century and into the 20th century; however, their use gradually declined due to advances in technology. In 1911, two separate incidents caused concern over potential gun violence in East Stroudsburg; one occurred when two people fought over possession of a Target pistol belonging to plaintiff Edward Fenton, Jr.; and another took place when three young boys locked themselves inside Mr. Broughton's store after stealing several handguns from other customers. Despite this increased security measures taken by both business owners, these events did not lead to any major problems ensuing from gun use within town limits. During World War II many Americans turned their attention towards arms production instead of traditional activities such as fishing and farming; consequently, availability of target pistols decreased significantly throughout the war years However, there are still some today who enjoy practicinggun targetshooting through outdated models such asintroducing new designs for older typesofguns

The history of the guns in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania goes back to 1836 when John Vandergrift and his father founded the first commercial gunsmithing shop in the town. The Vandergrift family continued to operate their business until 1938. In that year, John Vandergrift Jr. passed away and his son John V. Vandergrift took over the business. From 1938-1946, John V. Vandergriffit ran the business with his wife Margaret from their home on Second Street in East Stroudsburg. In 1946, John V.'s son David C. Vandergriffit took over operations from his father and became owner and operator of the store until 1990 when it was sold to Ronald Jaffe who operated it until 2004 when it was sold again to Jeffery Kappenberger who operates it today as a gunsmithing store/gun range located at 620 S 2nd Street in East Stroudsburg

The borough was established on December 8, 1868, when it was included in the newly created town of West Stroudsburg. On November 12, 1877, East Stroudsburg became a city and became part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census there were 5,376 people living in East Stroudsburg Borough. Of this population 54% are non-Hispanic white and 44% are non-Hispanic black or African American. Hispanic or Latino residents make up 2%. There are 1% Asian residents and 0% Native American residents among all inhabitants in East Stroudsburg Borough. As of 2000 there were 438 businesses operating in East Stroudsburg Borough with an average payroll of $27 million per year
