East Stroudsburg is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,876 at the 2010 census. It is home to East Stroudsburg University and the East Stroudsburg Steel Corporation. The township was established in 1784 by order of George Washington as a part of the Northwest Territory. It was named for George Augustus Stroud (1724-1810), an early settler and surveyor who helped lay out sections of what are now eastern Lackawanna County and southeastern Pennsylvania. In 1855, when the area became part of the Indiana Territory, East Stroudsburg became a part of that state as well. In 1882, John Denny founded the steel corporation in East Stroudsburg which soon became one of America's leading producers of steel products. East Stroudsburg was founded in 1760 by the people of the area. The town was originally called "Stroudsburg" after Sir George Strudwick, who donated land to the town. It became a borough in 1853 and then a city in 1889. The economy of East Stroudsburg is based mainly on manufacturing, with many companies located within the downtown area. In recent years, the city has been experiencing growth in fields such as technology and health care. The history of East Stroudsburg can be traced back to early European settlers who arrived here in Pennsylvania during the late 1600s and early 1700s. Many of these immigrants were farmers who left their homes to come to what is now Pennsylvania. One of these immigrants, George Washington Strudwick, donated land to the town for development. The original settlers built a few houses and started farming the area that today includes parts of East Stroudsburg and neighboring townships. The first mayor of East Stroudsburg was John Prentice. He served from 1805-1808 and again from 1812-1814. During his time as mayor, he developed a system which allowed residents to vote on issues affecting their community. This system helped make East Stroudsburg one of the most active communities in Pennsylvania at that time. During World War II, much activity took place within the city limits due to wartime needs such as munitions production or shipping duties related to national defense efforts. However, much important civic work took place outside of war zone areas while soldiers were away on military duty; this work included making food available for refugees living near Philadelphia during World War II and helping provide social services for those affected by Nazi occupation (e including Jews). In 1945, following World War II's end, Mayor Prentice stepped down but continued serving through an acting mayor until 1949 when Harry Acheson became mayoralty effective 1 October 1949 until his resignation effective 2 December 1949 due to ill health or unrelated reasons*. Mayor Acheson's term coincided with significant changes taking place within municipal government throughout PA resulting from population Growth (the so-called "Growth Era"), suburbanization*, etc.* During Mayor Acheson's term there also were several major construction projects completed including: new schools* (Deerfield School District #1 opened its doors in fall 1951), new police department building*, new library* (the first municipally funded library west of Pennsylvanian lines*), renovated City Hall* (*City Hall reconstruction project began on 5 January 1951) - all while keeping city services running smoothly without interruption! * Note: These are only some examples – over 50%of all municipally funded projects/projects during Mayor Acheson's tenure were either transportation projects or libraries!
East Stroudsburg was founded in 1755 by the Susquehannock people. The town was named for the East Stroudsburg River, which flows through it. The first settler in East Stroudsburg was George Washington. In 1802, the town became a city and was renamed after George Washington.
