They built a log cabin here and named it "Dreisbach". They were farmers until 1814 when they moved to what is now East Stroudsburg from nearby Mifflinburg because of an outbreak of yellow fever there. In 1828, their new town was founded on land bought from John Potter by Isaac Stout and others who had come overland during the American Revolution as part of an effort to build wagon trains for Canada. The name "East Stroudsburg" was chosen because it sounded like "east bank" or "steadfast." In 1846, two sawmills were built in East Stroudsburg by Andrew Dickson and he named them Dickson Brothers Mills after himself and his brother David Dickson. These mills produced lumber until 1917 when they closed due to competition from more efficient mills in America. In 1903, steel production began here by George Stephenson's British Steel Corporation which remains headquartered in East Stroudsburg today. Steel production ended here circa 2005 but much industry still flourishes around these companies including trucking, manufacturing goods for home delivery or retail use as well as scientific research done at local universities such as West Chester University Hospitality School where products are made into hospital beds and other medical equipment
