The town was named for the eastern border of Pennsylvania which is called East Stroudsburg. The first settler in East Stroudsburg was John Dickinson who came from Delaware County, PA. In 1814, John Dickinson died and his estate was divided among his children. The youngest son, James Dickinson took over the property and renamed it East Stroudsburg after himself. In 1821, James Dickinson's grandson John Dickinson II gave the town its present name of East Stroudburg. The first school in the town closed in 1824 but reopened in 1827 as Bethlehem Academy School. In 1830, a Congregational church was built on Main Street and remains today as one of the most popular places to attend services in town. After years of growth and development, East Stroudsburg reached its peak during the late 1800s when it had a population of around 60 people. However, during World War I, many businesses went out of business and there were no major changes or renovations until 1919 when East Stroudsburg became part of Bridgeport Township which also included nearby Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. During World War II many factories were set up within townships bordering Bridgeport so that production could be moved away from Philadelphia if needed due to air raids or other emergencies. Many residents left their homes during this time because they did not have anything to return to once their factories were evacuated or closed down; however, some stayed behind to continue their businesses or raise their families while others abandoned their homes altogether because they did not have enough money for resettlement or relocation costs associated with war-time living conditions outside of cities likePhiladelphia (known then as "the city"). In recent years there has been an increase in interest in downtown East Stroudsburg due to both its unique architecture and historical significance as well as plans for expanding downtown development into adjacent neighborhoods such as Northumberland Avenue which would include more shopspace and restaurants along with new housing developments on Market Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue which are still under construction today (although almost complete). These overall redevelopment plans may finally bring much-needed life back into DowntownEastStroudsburg which has languished since Hurricane Sandy hit last year) Overall it seems that despite initial setbacks technology is slowly starting to catch up with society with all types of businesses being reopening including those that have been closed for years like Steak 'n Shake (now known as Bob's Burger Joint), Sears (which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year),and Macy's Department Store just across Main Street from where I used to work before I retired several years ago now! Although these reversals may seem minor changes at first glance they really do reflect how far our economy has come sinceEastStroughdtownwasbuiltin1795!
