East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania is an incorporated city in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 28,827 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Luzerne County after Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The first Europeans to visit what is now East Stroudsburg were traders and travelers from England and Scotland who passed through the area between 1681 and 1683. In 1764, George Washington explored the area for a possible military post on the Susquehanna River. He did not find any suitable sites for such a fortification and returned to Virginia. In 1825, John Dickinson established a frontier trading post at Easton (now Allentown) on the Susquehanna River in order to promote trade with Native Americans along that stretch of river. The town of Easton was founded by James Aitken in 1826 as part of his effort to create a center of industry on the northward flowing Susquehanna River which had been largely agricultural since British Columbia became a province of Canada in 1871. In 1827, Easton built its first schoolhouse which still stands today within sight of downtown Easton. In 1830, Aitken erected a steamboat landing opposite present day Market Street near where he had earlier constructed a small dam to power his millwheel factory using water from nearby Rush Creek. This landing served as both portage point for passengers transferring from wagons ferried over the Susquehanna River or being transported downriver by boat before reaching their destination, as well as local market place for goods brought overland by wagon or horseback from rural areas further upriver. The development of transportation made it easier for people to reach their destinations and allowed eastern entrepreneurs such as Aitken and others to expand their businesses into new markets beyond those originally accessible by boat or wagon only during limited periods of time during regular seasons when navigation was difficult or unavailable

The town was founded by General John Forbes and was named for him, Easton Street being his original road name. It grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on a major trade route between New York City and Philadelphia. The population peaked at over 10,000 in 1878 but declined thereafter as transportation improvements made traveling to and from larger cities easier.
