East Stroudsburg was founded in 1755 by the Potters as a small trading post on the Susquehanna River. The town grew rapidly and by 1800 it had a population of over 2,000 people. By 1825, East Stroudsburg had become an important agricultural center with its own cotton plantations and large producing families. In the late 19th century, East Stroudsburg experienced rapid growth as a result of industrialization and became one of the most prosperous cities in Pennsylvania. However, during World War I (1914-18) East Stroudsburg was hit hard by the economic downturn and lost many jobs. After the war, growth slowed and eventually stopped entirely in the early 21st century. Today, East Stroudsburg is a largely residential community with some commercial activity.
