The decision paved way for advancements such as gas pistols which would later revolutionize crime prevention efforts. In 1865 rifle manufacturing companies closed down following riots taking place throughout America due to racial unrest sparked by Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation (Wyatt 1990: 209) .
