East Stroudsburg is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,471 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Hazleton–Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now East Stroudsburg was made on May 4, 1798 by George Washington and his party as they journeyed from Philadelphia to visit the Patriot troops stationed there during the Revolutionary War. They erected a log cabin on the site of present-day State College Boulevard and built another nearby for themselves. In 1802, John Eaton purchased land east of State College and founded Eatonville on it. The town grew rapidly due to the production of tobacco and other crops; Eatonville became an important commercial center for eastern Pennsylvania. In 1833, East Stroudsburg became part of Lancaster County when that county was created from parts of York and Jefferson counties. In 1853, Abraham Wood started a sawmill in what is now downtown East Stroudsburg and soon developed an extensive lumber business. He also began developing land north of downtown into what are now several neighborhoods such as North Edgehill (now known as University Park), South Edgehill (now known as Elmira), Belmont Heights (now known as West Chester), White Oak Hills (now known as Reading), Friendship Heights (now known as Downingtown), Kensington Heights (now known as Northumberland Township). These developments came to be called "the Woodland Empire." The growth of Eastern Pennsylvania led to increased demand for labor in mills throughout the region – which led to open-air worksites such as those found at Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Sparrow Point plant in nearby Scranton or American Gas Company's main station on Main Street in Allentown. By 1907, East Stroudsburg had more than 2200 residents within its limits; by 1930 it had become home to 5500 people according to the 2010 census estimate. During this period too, architecture emerged as a significant force with many prominent architects working in East Stroudsburg during this time including Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Andrew Johnson Macombs Jr.. During World War II, steel production increased greatly due to wartime demand; accordingly, East Stroudburg prospered both commercially and architecturally with new office buildings appearing nears township limits like Millbrook Towers overlooking downtown while military barracks were erected nears State College Boulevard/Eatonville Airport/Belmont Heights neighborhoods close to University Park/North Edgehill Neighborhoods etc.. However following war's end Pennsylvanian economy slowed significantly with unemployment rates reaching 20% by 1945 after years of heavy manufacturing investment failed to materialize outside munitions factories abroad despite promises made during wartime - leaving many city residents out of work while rural areas continued experiencing rapid growth leading some local businesses owners into bankruptcy during postwar decades although today much older industrial properties remain vacant within city limits still used occasionally for agricultural purposes due TO THE FORMER CITY OF EAST STROIHNDSBURG
East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania was founded on December 12, 1777 by the merger of two small towns in Lancaster County: Easton and Strafford. The town's first settlers were Quakers who had fled religious persecution in England. Easton was the larger of the two towns, and it was named after George Washington, the first president of the United States. Strafford was smaller and less developed, but it also received its name from General John Forbes during the Revolutionary War.
