The first settler in East Stroudsburg was John Dickinson in 1788. The present-day town was founded on March 12, 1837 by Andrew Denny and James Wriston after they purchased of land from Nicholas Laughton for $2 per acre. At that time it was part of Mercer County. In 1853 the community became a borough and in 1865 it became a city. In 1907 East Stroudsburg built its first school which still stands today as the towns only high school. In 1932 it annexed to Butler Township and remains an independent municipality to this day. In 1968 East Stroudsburg erected its now famous "Stroudsburg Arts District" which included manyFine Arts Centers such as the Eastern Art Museum and Black Diamond Gallery. East Stroudsburg is home to two of the oldest universities in America: Gettysburg College (founded 1795) and Swarthmore College (founded 1740). Gettysburg College has since merged with University of Pennsylvania but Swarthmore continues to offer undergraduate degrees here.
