In 1802, the name change to East Stroudsburg when it became part of Allegheny County following its merger with Westmoreland and Washington counties. In 1814, Lt Colonel George Washington Mackenzie erected a military post known as Fort Necessity near present-day Mount Carmel that served as an artillery supply depot during the War of 1812. The post fell into disuse after General Scott's army destroyed it in 1815 but continued to be used intermittently until 1840 when it was abandoned again due to increasing railroad traffic along Pennsylvania Route 6 which passed through town at that time. On October 15, 1840, local citizens led by Amos Sibley organized a successful 1863 uprising against English rule in what is now Hazleton Township; this event helped spur development within East Stroudsburg during the 1860s into what is today an economically prosperous community with a large number of businesses and residences dating back to that decade including many banks and professional organizations such as law firms and engineering firms

The town's nickname was "The Burning Town." After the fire, people worked hard to rebuild their homes and businesses. They did this by erection of brick walls around their townsite and by establishing new industries such as leather tanning and iron smelting. East Stroudsburg also became known for its rich textile industry which continues to produce quality products today. Today, East Stroudsburg is a busy research center with many universities nearby. Its rich history has been preserved in its buildings and landmarks, making it an important part of Pennsylvania's history and culture.
East Stroudsburg was founded in 1795 by the merger of two small villages, Easton and Clinton. The town was named after General George Washington, who had been born in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The first settler in East Stroudsburg was John Allen, who arrived from England in 1796. In 1806, Easton became a part of the United States and East Stroudsburg became an official town. The community experienced heavy development during the late 1800s and early 1900s. A large textile mill was built in 1898 and soon become one of the most important employers in the town.
