The Dunmore Rifle and Pistol Club was organized in 1876. The original target holders were a group of eight men who met at the home of Mr. John Prentice to shoot at a local park. The first match was held on October 12th, 1876, with twenty five shooters. In 1888, the club moved to the current location at 4th and Market Streets. A new rifle range was built in 1922 and still uses this design today In 1951, the Dunmore Rifle and Pistol Club became a member society of the Pennsylvania Rifle Association
Dunmore is a small, midsize town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. Dunmore was founded in 1795 by John Dunmore and his family. The population was 2,558 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Butler County. The first permanent settlers in what is now Dunmore were John Dunmore and his brother James Dunmore. They built their log cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River in 1795. In 1807, they purchased land from the government for $1,500 and started to build a home on it which they named "DunMORE". The brothers also improved the home's mill which they operated until 1827 when it became inactive due to a fire that destroyed most of their property. In 1828, John Dunmore married Rachel Gibson and JAMESDunmore took over management of the mill; however, this venture failed as well because of low water levels caused by heavy rains earlier that year. In 1840, Rachel Gibson died and JOHNDunmore remarried Anna Ladd who bore him six children: James (1846-1925), Thomas (1849-1936), Margaret (1851-1937), Arthur (1853-1937), Eliza Jane (1857-1945)and Sarah Jane (1859-1945). In 1850s two additional mills were added to the original three: one at present day Beechmont and another at present day Townsqurtown (). These mills produced cotton yarn for clothing manufacture and paper products such as hats or sailscloth respectively. John DunMORE died in 1865 but his wifeRachel remained active until her death five years later in 1872 aged 82 years old.; her body was buried beside her husband inside their log cabin near where he had settled down after moving from Watertown to get away from city life.........................................................................the village continued to be called "DUNMORE" even though post office moved back to Watertown in 1907.......................................................................Anna Ladd's fifth husband Levi Bestwick ran an grocery store next door for about 25 years beginning around 1900.......................................................................DunMORE came under control of neighboring Uniontown Township upon Anna Ladd's death.........................................................the last resident born hereabouts retired locally long before statehood………………………………………. Dunmore is a small town located in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania area. It has a population of approximately 5,000 people. The name "Dunmore" was derived from the Welsh word "dun", meaning "fortress." The first settlement in what is now Dunmore was founded by Hugh de DunMORE in the late 12th century. In 1729, John Armstrong built a mill on the Susquehanna River and named it after himself. The mill continued to be used until 1845 when it closed down due to competition from larger mills in the area. In 1812, two brothers, Michael and James DunMORE, started a farmstead called Dunmore on what is now South Street in Dunmore Township. They raised corn, cattle and children there until their death in 1868. Their son William took over the farmstead and continued to run it until his death in 1924. During World War II, many local men served in the military including George Fenton who fought at Normandy along with General Patton and Admiral Nimitz The post office was established at Dunmore in 1865 and remained open until 1954. In 1916, Michael DunMORE donated land for a school which became known as Dunmore Elementary School. The first building on this site was constructed of logs and daubed with mud to provide rudimentary instruction before being replaced by an brick structure that burned down during prohibition-era renovations project early last century
