Dunmore is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after Sir John Dunmore who fought in the American Revolution and founded Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The first settler in what is now Dunmore was James Hogg who arrived in 1753 from Scotland. He built a cabin on the east side of the Scioto River and named it Hoggstown after his father-in-law's home in that area. In 1800, Colonel George Washington sent Major General Isaac Brock to purchase land for a township in this area from James Hogg. On March 10th of that year, Brock entered into an agreement with James Hogg for four hundred acres (16 km²). In 1802, Captain John Sweeny purchased two hundred more acres (30 km²) from Brock for $675 dollars. In 1810 Doctor Christopher Gist established himself as a doctor in Dunmore and started an Academy which would later become known as Gist College which still stands today across the river from where he practiced today on Elm Street between Middleton Avenue and Thames Avenue North. When rapids were created on the Scioto River by tributaries flowing out of it due to climate change during drought years around 1850s many settlers began fleeing to other places such as Erie County because their crops would not grow when water levels were low so they had to build dams or reservoirs to store water which would then be released when conditions improved monsoon season came through providing irrigation for agriculture while also powering mills located downstream producing flour, lumber and other products used by everyone including those living upstream along with power generated by turbines turning generators creating electricity needed for lights etcetera all available right here right now thanksgiving day thank you dunMORE community!
Dunmore was founded in 1777 by General James Dunmore, who was seeking to expand British settlements into the Ohio Country. The town was named for Dunmore's brother-in-law,Sir John Dunmore. The first settler in the town was Peter Mountford. In 1780, a post office called "DunMORE" was established and remained in operation until 1854. In 1815, the area around DunMORE became part of the United States when President James K. Polk signed an executive order creating the area as West Virginia. On April 14, 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces attempted unsuccessfully to take control of DunMORE from Union forces under Colonel Robert Ewell; this event is often cited as one of the earliest examples of guerrilla warfare within a military campaign. The townspeople were successful in repelling repeated Confederate attempts at Invasion throughout 1861 and 1862; however, on September 2nd 1862 Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant attacked and captured DunMORE after successfully looting and burning most of its homes and businesses). In 1865, following the end of the war with Union control over all aspects of West Virginia (and consequent loss of lands), DunMORE reverted back to Pennsylvania government hands once again - though it continued to be known locally as "DunMORE". In 1927, a new high school (now closed) was built near what is now dun MORE High School; this building served as both current home day dun MORE High School and also served as a model for many subsequent schools built in that area including Mifflinburg Area Senior High School (now Mifflinburg Area Junior/Senior High School), Ponderosa Middle School (now defunct), and present day dun MORE Elementary School. A new public library was also constructed adjacent to dun MORE High School between 1927-1929 which remains today one of Easton's major tourist attractions along with various other historical buildings located within walking distance such as Old Market House which still stands active serving food services today & operated by Historic Markham Township Historical Society
