Dunmore is a small town in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Erie-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Dunmore comes from nearby Swarthoum Hundred. The first settler in what would become Dunmore Township was James Dunmore, who arrived in 1788. He named it after his father, John Dunmore, who had settled in the area five years earlier. In 1812, Samuel Henshaw bought land in what would become Dunmore Township and built a log cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River. He and his wife Jonellina operated a farm there until their death in 1825. Their son George ran the farm until around 1840 when he sold it to Isaac Henshaw Jr., who renamed it Henshawstown. In 1866, John Sweeny purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of swampland that lay east of present-day Swarthoum Hundred Road and donated it to Huntingdon County as Township Parkland for free use by all citizens. In 1928, authorities tore down part of this park to make way for new road construction and discovered an ancient fire ring dating back to pre-colonial times! Today's site includes a reconstructed early eighteenth century log cabin now used as a museum open daily 9am–4pm (until 4 pm Memorial Day). On July 8, 1800, during the American Revolution,[3] General Edward Braddock's army lost its way while marching through Huntingdon Valley en route to Yorktown Heights near Philadelphia.[4] A band of Indians led by Chief Pitt advanc'd from ambush just beyond Upper Swarthoum Creek where they were hiding and attacked what appears to have been about twenty white horsemen believed Colonel Braddock's main bodyguard;[5][6] although this attack remains undocumented history books still classify this event as one loses Its Way,[7][8][9][10] not knowing then that later that day General George Washington himself would lead an abortive relief attempt three miles (5 km) further upriver with much better prospects but ultimately unsuccessful[11]). After nightfall some 10 miles (16 km) south of Upper Swarthoum Creek Massacre Site Indian forces finally retreated back into their stronghold near Fort Erie after inflicting heavy casualties on British troops while also taking prisoner over 100 British soldiers—the largest single Native American capture during Arthur Stroud's Maryland Campaign[12]) which effectively ended British effortsSR1st Lt.(Col.) Dunmore was a small town in the state of Pennsylvania prior to the American Revolution. The town was founded by John Dunmore, who served as the first Lieutenant Governor of British America. The town was named for his ancestor, Dunmore on the east side of the Susquehanna River. The town prospered due to its location on a crossing point and its access to water supplies. In 1778, Dunmore became part of Patriot Township after it was organized from parts of Cumberland Township. In 1854, it became a borough and in 1870 it merged into Luzerne County. After World War II, Dunmore experienced rapid growth as an industrial center with numerous factories and businesses. During that time, the population increased from around 1,500 to over 15,000 residents. However, since then there has been little change in the demographics or economy of Dunmoretown.
Dunmore was first settled in 1710 by John Dunmore and his family. The town was named for the Dunmore family's farm, which once stood near the town. In 1879, the Pennsylvania Railroad built a line from Pittsburgh to Dunmore, making it easier for people to get around. The town continued to grow after that, and in 1923 it became a borough.
