Dunmore grew rapidly because of its location on the Susquehanna River and its access to trade with surrounding counties. In 1814, the town was renamed for George Washington. In 1832, Dunmore became a borough and then a city.

Dunmore is bordered by the Allegheny Mountains to the east and south, and by Westmoreland County to the west. The town was founded on November 8, 1765 by John Dunmore and his wife Susanna White. At that time it was known as "Nanticoke". In 1792, Dunmore became a part of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under charter from King George II. The first settler in what is now DunMORE was Nicholas Forbes who built a cabin in 1792 along with other early settlers including James Armstrong and Alexander McGee. In 1814, when troops led by Major General Anthony Wayne invaded Lancaster County to suppress an uprising against British rule, most of Butler and Lawrence counties were included in this offensive campaign called "the Niagara Expedition". The towns of Nanticoke and Newtown were among those evacuated as part of this evacuation which took place over three days beginning on October 25th. However, aftermath reports claim that many homes were left unoccupied because people had fled before Gen . Wayne's forces arrived. After being relieved from duty at Yorktown Heights he returned home via Valley Forge where he met his future wife Hannah Morehouse Headedley who lived nearby with her husband John Prentice Sr.. They had two children: Jonathan (1815-1901)and Anna (1817-1894). According to historian David Bogue there are several contributing factors leading up to Patriotism during this time period; these included feeling oppressed by Great Britain following its victory at Saratoga; concerns over upcoming war with France; fear that revolutionary changes would take place throughout Europe if conflict continued; feeling economically sidelined due to lack of access to resources brought about by technological advances such as railroads etc.; religious beliefs which aligned people with their respective countries rather than just English Protestants like them; social values such as self-reliance which emphasized individual responsibility while also promoting countryhood etc.; however one important factor may have been geo-political factors such as trade routes through Philadelphia connecting northern England with Mediterranean markets making goods available for export back home - allowing merchants within Philadelphia some level independence from ruling authorities without alienating locals or stirring up political unrest outside city limits). A second incarnation for DunMORE began around 1830 when Isaac Woodward moved into what is now known as Southside Extension adjacent to present day Weichert Road/Northumberland Avenue - becoming one of THE earliest farmers in town & setting an example for later generations! Thereafter various families started moving into sections located along Northumberland Ave., Weichert Rd., Huntingdon Rd., nearpresent day Patton Road Ferry landing & parts acquired near present day Mifflinburg Twp., between Monongahela River & present day Greensburg Twp... finally Bethlehem Township boundaries were established circa 1800’s adjoining portions now located inside current Borough Of Butler Moses Dunkin came next followed soon after by Elijah Woods who ran a tavern called “The Meadows” across from today’s High School lot on Old Huntingdon Pike opposite Wittenberg Baptist Churchsite where he raised chickens until 1810 when township officials demolished it because it did not meet zoning requirements….. then next door East Side Tavern run until 1812…. finally Moses Dunkin erected his house on what is now College Drive in 1816…. From then until 1861 no new buildings were erected in dunMORE proper but instead numerous extensions/additions developed throughout much of neighboring WestmorelandCounty…this process continued unabated until demolishing OF ALL STRUCTURES IN DUNMORE TOWARD THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY BY A COUPLE OF BUSINESS OWNERS REASONING THAT IT WAS NOW OUT OF THEIR CONTROL WHICH THEY DID NOT WANT TO ADMINISTER ANY MORE SERVICES TO THEIR COMMUNITY SO AS TO MAINTAIN AND OPERATE THEM AGAIN AS A TOWN

Dunmore was a small town in McKean County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was founded in 1764 by John Dunmore and his family. The population of Dunmore at the 2010 census was 402. John Dunmore arrived in Pennsylvania in 1764, after serving as an officer in the British army during the War of Independence. He built a cabin near what is now Dunmoretown and started to farming the area. In 1768, he married Susannah Heard, who came from a prominent family in Loudoun County, Virginia. The couple had four children: John (1769-1834), James (1771-1831), Mary (1774-1865) and Annabella (1777-1858). In 1772, John and Susannah moved to what is now Monroeville Township on Delaware Creek because of the harsh winter climate there. They farmed until their death in 1834, when James took over their farm land and continued to grow crops until 1850. The Heard families left DunMORE for good about that time; they were replaced by Irish immigrants who named themselves McKean settlers. After World War II, most of the remaining Heard descendants emigrated to other parts of America or Ireland where they continue growing corn, potatoes and other crops today.
