In 1773, Dunmore was a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about 25 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. At the time it had a population of only 100 people. By 1787, the population had grown to 3,000 and Dunmore became an important military post on the frontier. The first gun target in Dunmore was made by George Washington in 1775 during his pre-Revolutionary War campaigns against the British. The target was located near today's intersection of Northumberland Avenue and West Market Street. The first shot from a cannon at that site killed two Indians and damaged several homes. Gun targets continued to be made in Dunmore until 1802 when all firing ceased due to lack of powder available there. Gun targets were again used shortly after Independence when American forces recaptured Philadelphia from the British in 1776.
