Dunmore is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,561 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Dunmore was John Dunmore who arrived in 1682. He named his land for James II of Scotland who had been defeated at the Battle of Culloden and had fled to America. Dunmore was one of twelve townships that formed Lackawanna County on November 12, 1792 from parts of Allegheny and Sullivan counties. On February 14, 1812, it became a borough when the remaining Township of Scranton merged into it. On December 3rd 1827, a fire destroyed most of the town center and much of its infrastructure including mills, churches and schoolhouses; however not all buildings were destroyed (e.g., Presbyterian Church). In 1870-71 new millstones were built which re-opened the community's economy as a major producer of flour for local markets as well as export to Europe and North America. One such product exported from Dunmore was "Rye whisky" which still exists today as an agricultural product made from corn grown in central Pennsylvania plantations where rye is dried over open fires called "stalks". The Distilled Spirits Council reports that exports totaled $2 million in 2009 dollars - making DunMORE one of only two municipalities in America with this type trade!

The first store opened in Dunmore in 1824. In 1840, Dunmore had five stores and twenty-four dwellings. There were also two schools: one for children and one for adults. In 1850, the population of DunMORE had grown to 1,500 people; by 1860 it had reached 2,000 people! In 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Washington D.C., many residents of DunMORE gathered at the local courthouse to mourn his death; however, only fifteen people attended his burial service at Mount Auburn Cemetery nearby! Although its economy changed little during most of its history—mainly because there was no railroad connecting the town with larger settlements—DunMORE’s unique architecture has been preserved over time as part of its history lesson for students throughout Allegheny County Schools District One!
