One of the most important events in DunMORE'S history occurred on October 16th 1814 when General George Armstrong Custer arrived with his army at Newtown valley near present day Altoona and asked for help reaching Fort Leavenworth across Topeka mountain It wasn't until 1861 that a post office was established here and mail service continued until 1915 In 1875 Rev John Fenton began attending services here as pastor of First Presbyterian church which he built In 1903 Mrs Sallie McFarlane became Miss America while living here and her coronet can still be seen outside today's First Presbyterian Church

Dunmore was a small village in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was located on the Susquehanna River, about south of Philadelphia. The village had a population of 177 at the 2000 census. Dunmore was first established as a little town in 1785 by men who were attracted to its location on the Susquehanna River and because it offered easy access to farming land. In 1810, it became an incorporated Village. The first postmaster and clerk were both men: George Prentice and John Carleton. The first mill in Dunmore was built by Jeremiah McCormick in 1812. By 1830, there were five mills operating in Dunmore; these included three gristmills, one sawmill, and two printworks. The paper industry began to grow rapidly during the 19th century; by 1850 there were six printers in Dunmore. In 1870, the last mill stopped production due to competition from cheaper machines imported from Europe. From 1840 until 1860, Dunmore had a single schoolhouse which served all of Fayette County; after that time it began using different schools each year until 1889 when it became an all-permanently operated high school (now known as Duquesne University). This school also functioned as a community center for many years before being closed down due to budget constraints in 2001. In 1813-14 local surveyors William Ford and Isaac Farnsworth surveyed what would become Dunmore Township; this area would later be part of Philadelphia's North Side neighborhood east of Broad Street between Spring Garden Road and South Street Streetside Park (). Ford laid out streets through what is now parts of Lower Merion Township (northwest side) while Farnsworth laid out everything north of his line (). In 1815-16 local surveyor James Wilson surveyed what would become Easton Township (), which would eventually become part ofPhiladelphia's Northeast Side neighborhood () east of 15th Street between Walnut Street and Cedar Lane Streetside Park (). Wilson laid out streets through what is now parts of Upper Merion Township (southwest side) while Farnsworth laid out everything north of his line ().
The town of Dunmore was founded in 1795 by settlers from the British colony of Nova Scotia. The settlement was named for General James Dunmore, who led an expedition against the French in 1794. In 1806, Dunmore became a part of the United States and was renamed Independence Township.
