He built a cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River. In 1779, Lewis' cabin became the first permanent structure in what would become Dunmore. The town began to grow rapidly thanks to its location and access to water which made it an ideal place to settle. By 1803, there were over 100 residents living in Dunmore. The growth of Dunmore continued until 1825 when it was forced to abandon its location due to new development upstream. However, during this time period, Duncanmer had a significant impact on local economy as it became an important center for farming and trade withinSusquehanna County. In 1868,Dunmore merged with neighboring townships form what is now known as Union Township. However, despite this merger being beneficial for both communities, many aspects of life remain distinctly separate from each otherToday- most notably education and healthcare services are provided exclusively through Union Township residents while all non-Union township residents must attend public schools within that township or go private school outside of their county limit
On October 27, 1788, Dunmore was granted the right to make his own laws by the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The town's first government was a committee of five men under the presidency of John Dickinson. In 1800, Dunmore voted to secede from Pennsylvania and form its own state. As a result, he became persona non grata in the state and lost much of his political power. In 1802, he moved to Kentucky where he died in 1812.
