In 1814, following his victory over General George Washington at Monmouth Junction on September 11th, James Dunmore formed an association with other landowners along the Susquehanna River valley west of Philadelphia called The Patriot Company Limited which hoped to promote commerce and protect settlers against Native Americans who were raiding their property northeast of Philadelphia.. At first glance it may seem strange that such a small community would have become so influential within what is now Pittsburgh but it was due largely to Dunmore's tireless effort marketing his new community as "the best place in all North America."
