In 1758, Dunmore Township was formed from part of Huntingdon Township. The first recorded use of binoculars in Pennsylvania was in 1787 when a group of men were observing a cricket game at the Monongahela River. In 1802, the township moved to its current location and began to sell land for farming purposes. In 1812, the township had four stores and six residents. By 1840, there were twelve stores and seventy-six residents. During the American Civil War, Dunmore suffered heavily as Confederate forces burned homes and destroyed crops. However, by 1865, the town had recovered and become one of the most thriving towns in central Pennsylvania. It experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction until World War II caused it to decline again. From 1941 to 1945, Dunmore served as an Army Air Forces training station for enlisted men serving in World War II. Afterward, it regained some of its former prosperity as a community center before becoming a borough in 1951. In 1998, Dunmore became the county seat after being chosen over Johnstown by an referendum vote

Dunmore is a small town in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Dunmore is located on the south side of the Allegheny Mountains and east of Pittsburgh. The first settler in what would become DunMORE was John Dunmore who arrived in 1751. He and his family founded a small community on land that they acquired from the Native American tribe known as the Shawnee. DunMORE developed into a thriving agricultural village with two stores, a blacksmith shop, and an inn which served travelers for several years before it burned down in 1814. In 1827, another store was built and became known as the " Masthead Store." A gristmill was also built in this time period and became one of the most important commercial institutions in town. By 1830, there were three stores and four houses in DunMORE- all with their own entrances leading to their respective lots within walking distance of each other! In 1859, when Lycoming County was created from parts of Westmoreland and Butler counties, DunMORE became part of Lycoming Township under the jurisdiction of Lycoming County Court. During this time period much change took place within DunMORE; many new homes were erected along Main Street while others were moved away or destroyed during World War II (euphemistically called "the war to end all wars"). In 1951, afterLycoming Township abolished its court system and merged with Adams Township to form Adams County Borough Council (ACBC), Dun MORE reverted back to its original name: "DunMORE". The borough council continued to operate until 1984 when it ceased operations due to budget cuts made by then-Adams County Borough President Eileen Kappenberger effective January 1st that year following her appointment as county executive! On November 16th 1944 Congressman Anthony Youngblood visited dunMORE for an event commemorating World War II Victory over Japan attended by local dignitaries including Speaker Joseph McCarthy who offered him his endorsement! On December 2nd 1946 Vice President Harry S Truman stopped by for lunch at Masthead Store prior to attending a rally at Forbes Air Force Base being held support troops returning home from WWII! One day after his visit Representative Joe Biden stopped by en route to Scranton while performing campaign duties - famously remarking "I've never seen anything like it here" On July 4th 2003 Mayor Tom Wolf announced plans for redevelopment dubbed "TheVillage", which would create 554 jobsopportunities throughout Kyle/Dun MORE areas including 50% job training opportunities through nearby Southwestern Pennsylvania Community College! The mayor's announcement generated excitement among residents who have long been concerned about decades-long neglect of these communities resulting in high unemployment rates throughout commonwealth region

Dunmore was founded in 1777 by James Dunmore, an American Revolutionary War officer. The town grew rapidly during the eighteenth century, and by 1800 it had a population of over 1,000. In 1825, Dunmore became the seat of justice in Lancaster County. After annexation by Pennsylvania in 1868, the town lost its status as a county seat but continued to thrive as a rural community. By the end of the twentieth century, however, Dunmore had shrunk to a small village with only about 150 residents. The history of Dunmore begins with its founding as an outpost on the Susquehanna River by James Dunmore and his fellow officers from British forces who had surrendered at Saratoga after the war. The site chosen for DunMORE was on high ground overlookingpresent-day Lancaster County and could provide passage for supplies and troops moving between Philadelphia and points eastward during the Revolutionary War. The first settlers arriving in 1777 were menaced by Native Americans who killed some of them while attempting to cross the Susquehanna River. However, within a few months of their arrival, these initial pioneers had erected log cabins and begun trading with local farmers. In 1778 Governor Thomas Paine arrived in DunMORE with 2000 soldiers to help quell Indian hostilities against British colonialists; he soon realized that this new frontier would be one long battle against native resistance if English settlement were not successful. In January 1779 James dunMORE became proprietorof lands extending from present-day Lancaster County through Berks County to western York County; he named his land "DunMORE." On November 10th of that year (the day after Yorktown), Captain John Armstrong arrived at "DunMORE" with 8 men under his command having left Boston four days earlier aboard HMS Fortunato under direction of General George Washington's army following their victorious Battle at Saratoga Creek which ended Great Britain's involvement in America's revolutionary conflict! This event signaled an important turning point for both English colonists living along Pennsylvania's thenundeveloped frontier and New Englanders living farther inland who now saw themselves as part of something larger than themselves - they began calling themselves " Pennsylvanians." It is interesting to note that even though other settlements such as Reading or Mifflinburg were established much later onPennsylvania’s same borderland (late eighteenth century), these towns never attained significant sizes or populations until well into nineteenth century when they too experienced rapid growth due largely to natural improvements brought about by railroad development along this ancient trade route connecting West Virginia & Kentucky via Bethlehem & Phila., PA.–and especially due to increasing numbers arrivepouringintoPennsylvaniaduringthe mid19thcentury ledbyrailroadmen looking for fertile soil& cheapest labor–just like those comingtoDunMOREduringtheRevolutionaryperiod!
