The townsite at which Dunmore was founded and located along the Susquehanna River were first settled by Scottish farmers and their families in 1781 after they arrived from Scotland via boat during George Washington's American Revolution expedition to support independence from Great Britain. James Dunmore, an Englishman who had emigrated to North America with his parents in 1757, made the land grants to these early settlers including 500 acres (2 km²) for each male settler and 100 acres (40 ha) for each female settler. By 1800, local residents had built homes on some of these tracts and began trading goods with neighbors back home while isolated by nature from other settlements on the Susquehanna Valley near Altoona and Harrisburg.
