The first settler in Dunmore was James Dunmore who arrived in 1757. He founded a farm on what is now Main Street and soon after built a log cabin. Swedish settlers also settled here early on and by 1805 there were 20 Swedish families living in Dunmore. In 1814, John Dunmore, Sr., set up shop as a general store and post office here. The community grew rapidly during the 19th century with agriculture becoming an importantstay of the economy until the onset of World War II when manufacturing took over. Today, Dunmore still boasts its traditional farms with dairy cows tending to their fields while residents continue to rely on agricultural activities for sustenance. In 1916, local school superintendent Maudie Benson organized a group of girls to form "The First Girl's Aid Society" which quickly became known as "The Ladies' Auxiliary". This organization helped provide social services for local women including cooking meals for prisoners of war and visiting sick patients at hospitals; it also provided transportation to various events throughout the community. In 1951, Mrs. Benson donated her home – later renamed "the Benson House" – to help support the local poor and needy through providing shelter, food stamps and other assistance programs until 1995 when it was sold off to become a Bed & Breakfast inn called The Highland Inn & Spa located adjacent to Interstate 95 just outside of town limits). Dunmore is a small town in Potter County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia–Wilmington– Bridgeport Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Dunmore started arriving in 1810 and they built their homes around a large springs known as "the well." In 1815, John Dunmore donated land to the township for a public school. The first school building was built on the current site of dunMORE High School in 1834. In 1859, Timothy Neely bought 500 acres (2 km²) of land north of Dunmore and founded the city of Erie on it. Neely died in 1860 and his estate passed to his son-in-law Julius Marx who renamed it Dunmore after himself. The new city had no connection with any existing village or town within Potter County and it did not exist until 1862 when its charter was granted by the Pennsylvania General Assembly. In 1865, local farmers helped build a crude mill which began operations that year. By 1870, mills had been erected at both ends of Main Street near present day Mifflin University and some residents started to develop cotton plantations on nearby hillsides that produced ample crops for export but also created quite a bit of noise and smoke from these activities. In 1875 an act were passed providing for education within Dunmore Township; this early effort led to establishment of two schools: one for boys and one for girls (today’s DunMORE High School). After years of growth thanks largely to immigrant labor – especially Germans – white flight began starting in earnest during World War I (1914-18), leading to significant decreases in population density between 1920-1950 while skilled white workers chose other locations outside township limits due primarily to high prices resulting from competition from industry elsewhere throughout America during those years; however even after whites left Dunmore Township enrollment continued slowly increasing through 1971 reaching 463 by 1990*.
