Dunmore is a small town in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,744 at the 2010 census. Dunmore is located on the eastern border of Northampton County and is bordered by Berks County to the north, Carbon County to the east, and Huntingdon County to the south. The first settler in what would become Dunmore was Nicholas Dunham in 1740. In 1815, Samuel Hazard purchased land from Nicholas Dunham for $2 per acre. The area later became known as Hazardville after Samuel Hazard's son-in-law, George Washington White. At that time there were just six houses in Dunmore and its population numbered only eighty-six people total. By 1840, Dunmore had five stores and three churches which together served an estimated 2,500 residents. In 1851 John Swartz bought land from hazard for $4 per acre which included dun more creek running through it. By 1865 Swartz had built twelve homes on his lot and by 1870 there were twenty homes with a total population of 592 people living in what would become Dunmore Township (later named Hazleton Township). On November 1st 1881 the township was organized into two townships: Hazleton Township to the south (comprising all of present day Hazleton Borough) and DunMORE to the north (containing only parts of present day DunMORE Borough). In 1911 James Wolkentin opened a grocery store at 209 Main Street in Hazleton Township which soon became one of the most popular businesses in town with customers coming from all over Pennsylvania as well as Delaware Valley counties in central PA. In 1916 James Wolkentin married Emma Welsh who also ran her own grocery store next door until her death in 1978; this left JWOWKENTIN & CO., INC., THE Original Small Grocery Store still operating today! For many years it has been one of downtown Hazleton's most popular tourist attractions!

The community was formed on December 6, 1753 when Captain John Dunmore and his men, after capturing a British fort in the region, established a trading post here. The first settler was Nicholas Burr. Located near the confluence of the Susquehanna River and Clearfield Creek, Dunmore became an important center for trade with all directions. The commercial hub at Dunmore attracted settlers from all over by the 18th century. By 1800, there were more than 100 residents in DunMORE Township. The town rapidly grew as businesses cd shipped goods to all corners of Pennsylvania and beyond. In 1825, the canal was built through town to bring water from the Susquehanna River south to Philadelphia; this helpedDunmore become a leading city in central Pennsylvania. A fire destroyed most of downtown DunMORE on October 15th 1904; however, due to its quick response by firefighters and donations from local citizens, most damage was repaired within hours. In 1929-1930, construction began on what would become known as "the bulb" - a new shopping mall which quickly became one of PA's largest shopping destinations. Today's downtown contains over 20 stores and restaurants including Macy's Department Store as well as two hotels - one designed by James Cornere Jr., and another built by McKim Lee + Partners - both recognized for their high-end design standards. In addition to its role as an economic engine for surrounding communities during the early 21st century,DunMORE has also experienced significant cultural changes throughout its history including becoming home to several popular music festivals (includinglammiversary XVIII), professional wrestling bouts (including RAW & SmackDown LIVE), major league baseball games featuring teams from nearby Lehigh Valley (which includes Cumberland County) and even an annual horror film festival!
