Columbia, Pennsylvania was the location of one of the first military flashlight manufacturing plants in the United States. In 1916, Columbias first high school opened after several years of construction; it was renamed Jefferson High School after then-President Woodrow Wilson's father, who had donated land for the school. Since 2000, when Columbias public library system opened its doors to all residents and children within two blocks of its building (the only one in Butler County), community engagement has been an important focus for both institution and staff alike - operations have been improved through teacher training programs as well as partnerships with local businesses and organizations across many sectors including education, health care, agriculture/forestry/fishing etc.; Columbias Library now serves over 350 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade from throughout Butler County!

Throughout its history, Columbia has been known for its agriculture: For many years it was one of the most important food supply centers in central Pennsylvania because it had a reliable water supply and good land for farming. After thousands of acres burned during fighting during World War II - leaving little crop residue behind - farmers turned to hay production as their primary strategy.Columbia also played a significant role in American politics during this time period: In 1828, Trimble helped found Lancaster County and served as its first governor; he later served as speaker of the house before dying at age 80 years old in 1840 while still serving on Lancaster County Council. The area now known as Columbia, Pennsylvania was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1774, the British took over the colony and renamed it York County. The population of York County grew to about 30,000 in 1790, but by 1800 only 10% of the county's residents were white. In 1801, a group of farmers in Columbia Township formed a town charter and named their new town after Lord John Russell (1772-1838), an English statesman who served as Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister during the Napoleonic Wars. The town quickly became a power center in eastern Pennsylvania because of its location at the crossroads between Philadelphia and Lancaster counties. In 1828, local Republicans organized a state convention to nominate James K. Polk for President of the United States. At that meeting, Columbia township voted 2-1 against nominating Polk because they felt he would not be able to carry their community into war on behalf of America. In 1829, Congress passed legislation authorizing President Andrew Johnson to annex York County into Kentucky as part of his negotiations with France over control of Louisiana. Johnson did not follow through with his plans and instead annexed Cumberland County instead. This decision enraged many northeastern Pennsylvanians who saw themselves as second-class citizens being forced into inferior treatment under Kentucky law while their compatriots continued to enjoy full citizenship and political rights within the United States.
