Columbiadeputy voted to become a city on December 12th 1903 following annexation by Philadelphia due to its significant economic growth that had taken place since its incorporation into municipal government several years earlier –an event which helped draw heavy investment from businesses and entrepreneurs throughout Philadelphia proper (and beyond) to support Columbiadeputy’s burgeoning commercial district). Though it may not have initially seemed like such a big deal –given thatPhiladelphia itself only had an estimated population of over twenty thousand at that point–the addition of Columbia to Philadelphia’s municipal landscape quickly began to shape both urban/commercial patterns within the city itself as well as Columbiadeputy’s social landscape: through its rapid expansion into hitherto rural areas it quickly became one of Philly’s most ethnically diverse neighborhoods ( Indeed, today many non-native Philadelphians still erroneously identify themselves as being from “Columbia Township” despite having no connection whatsoever to this historically German neighborhood). The region around Columbia, Pennsylvania was settled by English colonists in the late 17th century. The area now includes portions of both the state of Pennsylvania and Delaware. The first European to settle in the area was John Patuxent, a British military officer who arrived in 1681. He founded a small town named Columbia on the Susquehanna River. Over time, other Europeans began to arrive, and by 18th century, Columbia had become a bustling community with several stores and a population of around 100 people. In 1792, the United States took control of Philadelphia following their victory in the Revolutionary War. As part of this new government, Congress passed a bill authorizingthe construction of an express road from Harrisburg to Washington City via Columbia. This road would eventually be known as the route of Route 66. As transportation became more important during the 19th century, Columbia grew increasingly popular as a stopover for travelers on their way to Philadelphia or New York City. By 1854, there were already over 50 businesses operating in Columbia; this number increased dramatically when the Railroad Age came about and railways began routing routes through much of central Pennsylvania instead of relying on stagecoaches or horse-drawn vehicles. During this time period, also known as "the Great Railroad Robbery" (1856-1857), several wealthy entrepreneurs made large profits by stealing cars from railroads across America using daring raids over open country bridges. One such robber baron is said to have been Cyrus McCormick and his brother Samuel Colt – two men whose acquisition of patents for firearms gave them enormous wealth). In response to these crimes, many railroad companies placed restrictions on how many cars could be parked at one station at any given time (a practice still used today). This policy helped ensure that most passengers had access to only one car per visit; however, it also led to some very high-profile thefts such as that which occurred at White Sands Missile Range in 1961 when thieves managed to steal 57 passenger trains between Albuquerque and Miami Beach!
