Columbia is a small town in western Pennsylvania, located on the Susquehanna River. The population was 3,702 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Columbia, South Carolina which was founded by white settlers in 1784. The first settler in what is now Columbia was Nicholas Brown who arrived in 1786. He and his family built a cabin on the bank of the Susquehanna River. In 1812, John Armstrong moved to Columbia from Huntingdon Township and started a farm that became known as Armstrong’s Landing. In 1814, David Hendrickson purchased land east of Columbia from Nicholas Brown and established Hendrickson’s Ferry landing on the Susquehanna River. In 1824, he donated 60 acres (24 ha) to form Columbiana Township which included present day Columbia and parts of neighboring townships including Monroeville and Pottsville. The township was named for General George Washington Forbes who fought with distinction at Yorktown during the American Revolution. Forbes had been born in Scotland but came to America after fleeing military service there during the Napoleonic Wars. Columbia became an important center for trade following its incorporation into township government in 1834. It continued to be so through most of its history until it merged with Potter County in 1907 to form Cumberland County
