The early 20th century saw many technological advances for Columbia including: electric lights in 1897; telephone service in 1914; prohibition of alcohols in 1920; world’s first gasoline powered car services starting in 1922; opening of a new grocery store called "The Faire" in 1924; rapid growth following World War II as production shifted from agriculture to industry; water tower built in 1951-1952 followed by the installation of two pipelines bringing potable water directly into town from Susquehanna River

However, Biddle persevered and By 1810 he had built several large warehouses which allowed him to bring in goods without having to ship them across state lines
The area that is now Columbia, Pennsylvania was first settled by the Lenape people in the late 16th century. In 1718, Columbia Township was formed from parts of Northumberland and Cumberland counties. The township's land was donated by John Dickinson to the government of Lancaster County in 1796. In 1814, the town of Lebanon was founded in what is now Columbia Township. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its access to businesses and transportation. By 1825, Lebanon had a population of over 200 residents. In 1828, an act were passed by the Pennsylvania General Assembly making it a part of York County. In 1829, a mill located in Columbia Township became the first water power mill in York County. The mill operated until 1862 when it closed due to lack of money needed to keep it running. The area around Columbia Township began to grow as agricultural production increased during the 19th century. During this time, many mills were built near Columbia including one that became known as "the Giant" because it produced large quantities of flour per day.
