In 1861, when Pennsylvanian Civil War broke out, Union forces burned down two frontier stores at Forksville along with several other buildings near modern day Yorktown Heights in order to capture arms cache belonging to Confederate General Robert Ewell.. This event is generally regarded as one of the turning points leading up to Battle Of Gettysburg where over 60% of all casualties occurred civilian males between 16-54 years old

The area that is now Columbia, Pennsylvania was part of the Susquehanna River Valley region for over three million years. The first humans to live in this area were the Lenape people, who lived around the falls of the Susquehanna River. In 1681, a party of Dutch settlers led by Hendrick Van Brakel arrived in present-day Columbia and founded a small community called "Achterhoek" on what is now Third Street. By 1750, there were over 20 Dutch families living in Columbia. Columbia was originally part of Easton Township but was split off from Easton in 1837 when it became part of York County. The town started as a small village and grew rapidly after its incorporation as a borough in 1857. It annexed parts of the surrounding townships until 1974, when it became an independent city with its own government and economy. Columbia is known for its rich history and vibrant culture which has contributed to its nickname "The City of History." Its museums include the University Museum (founded in 1801), which contains world-renowned collections including art, archaeology, science, and mathematics; the Ellen Waring House (built in 1895), which is home to one of America's largest collection of Tiffany glassware; and the Columbian Exchange Center (opened in 2002). Additionally, Columbia is home to several hospitals such as St Joseph's Hospital and Mercy Hospital both located within walking distance of each other as well as Point Breeze Health System across town.
