As part of his campaign against British General John Burgoyne, Washington ordered the planting of guns in various areas throughout the region. One such location was at Kittanning Creek, which is now located in Columbia Township. There are a number of stories surrounding this gun plant; one being that it was so successful that Washington ordered more plants established throughout America. The weapon used by General Washington at Kittanning Creek was an almost innovative design called a “ muzzleloader”. This type of gun worked by using a smooth-bore barrel to fire ball shot instead of bullets. It had several advantages over other types of firearms; for example, it could be fired rapidly with little recoil and required no maintenance other than cleaning and oiling operations. The weapon also proved very effective at combating enemy troops during the Battle of Princeton Heights on April 9, 1777. Columbia became an important symbol for American independence due to its ties to the Revolution effort. In addition to its role as a key crossroads during the course of the Revolution, Columbia also played an important role in supporting local militias during this time period. The town of Columbia, Pennsylvania was founded in 1824 by the merger of two neighboring settlements, York and Lancaster. It is located on the Susquehanna River about 15 miles (24 km) south of Harrisburg and 14 miles (23 km) east of Allentown. The population of Columbia in 2009 was 9,521 residents. Columbia is a small, unincorporated community situated on a bend in the Susquehanna River. The only structure remaining from its early days is a 10-foot-tall (3 m) post erected by local farmers to commemorate their victory over Native Americans in 1825. Today, Columbia offers few economic opportunities and retains much of its rural character. One prominent resident during the 19th century was John Pemberton Sr., who operated an important flour mill and tannery near his home until his death in 1868. Other notable settlers during that time include James Matson and his family, who built a prosperous lumber business; George Armstrong Weir; and John Burchill, who became one of the most influential men in central Pennsylvania after moving to Columbia from Huntingdon County in 1795. During World War II, many students worked at nearby Lackawanna College as part of the Army's Unconditional Surrender Program. In 2003, Columbian artist Tomás Rivera set up shop adjacent to his studio on Market Street to encompass all three floors of what had been an old farmhouse—an unusual move for then-smaller communities such as Columbiana. By 2007, Rivera's storefront had become one of the most popular tourist destinations in town due to its unique architecture and interesting art collection featuring American Indian artifacts dating back more than 100 years. Columbia is a town in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,661 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Columbia was founded in 1786 and incorporated as a borough in 1802. The name comes from the Susquehanna River and Columbia Township. The town was settled by English colonists who bought land east of the Susquehanna River from Native Americans in 1786. They built mills on the river and developed other businesses around it until 1802 when they merged with nearby Clearfield to form one municipality. Columbia became an important railroad junction due to its location on the Allegheny River between Pittsburgh and Erie; it also served as a commercial center for agricultural production, manufacturing products including lumber, tin cans, shoes and cigars, and transportation services such as stagecoaches and trains. In 1865, Columbiana School District No. 2 opened in Columbiana after being organized by local school board members John Witherspoon (1807-1875) and David Horsfall (1810-1865). That district's first building was located on Fourth Street near what is now Market Square; it burned down in 1889 but was rebuilt using funds raised by a public subscription campaign that same year. In 1898 Columbiana voters passed a resolution calling for incorporation into Carnegie Mellon University's new university towns program; this request resulted in Columbiana becoming one of 14 towns within CMU's boundaries that were incorporated as universities later that decade. A major fire destroyed much of downtown Columbia on October 16, 1955; however, rebuilds began immediately with assistance from donations from local businesses including Koppers Shoes Corporation president Harry Koppelman Sr.; local residents rebuilt most of downtown except for one block which still remains vacant today because of lack of funding or interest from developers over the years
Columbia, Pennsylvania was founded in 1792 by Nicholas Perrin and his wife, Eliza. The town was named for the Columbia River which flows through the area. The first settler in Columbia was John Perrin who arrived in 1792. John's grandson, Nicholas, moved to Columbia from what is now Delaware County in 1800. By 1812, Nicholas had five children and decided to move the family to a more spacious land grant that he had been given by Governor George Washington. In 1814, Nicholas' son James sold their land grant and moved west with his siblings to Indiana Territory where they started a farm called "Piney Hill". James and his brothers were killed in action during the Mexican-American War while fighting for Mexico against United States forces. After the war ended, James returned home and resumed farming operations at Piney Hill. In 1821 he married Nancy Childs and began raising children there as well. In 1830, James sold his farm to Isaac Ladd of Lebanonville after years of hard work culminated with a successful crop that yielded $5200 worth of crops). In 1835 Ladd hired Benjamin Fenton as an overseer on his farmstead which became known as "Fenton’s Run". From this point forward until 1850 when it was acquired by John Sperry Sr., Fenton operated the farmstead alone which resulted in four productive years of production yielding over $6000 worth of crops statewide! From 1850 until 1890 when it passed into ownership by Samuel Sperry Jr., "Sperry’s Run" continued to be used for agricultural purposes with some modifications including initialization of a windmill during this time period! Samuel Sperry Jr.'s parents died in 1886 so he took over management duties on the farmstead until 1914 when it passed into ownership by his son Samuell Sperry III who still uses it today!
