During the American Revolution, Columbia was one of the few townships not Bombed during the war. In 1871, Columbia became a city and was renamed after Columba Major, an English saint who helped found Derry Castle in Northern Ireland. In 1902, Columbia experienced its first tornado when a severe storm swept through the town. After World War II began,Columbia quickly grew as an industrial center due to its proximity to Pittsburgh and its ability to ship goods overseas using the Port of Philadelphia. However, during the 1990s recession this growth slowed down and Columbium lost some of its importance as a commercial center.
Columbia is a town in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what became Columbia were Baptist missionaries who arrived in 1795. They named their new settlement after the Roman city of Colonia Augusta Belgica which they had visited on their way to America. The town's name was changed to Columbiana in 1814 when it became part of the Indiana Territory. In 1837, it became a county seat and was renamed Columbia after George Washington's home state of Virginia. The area now comprising Columbia has been settled by Europeans for centuries, with some sites dating back as far as 10,000 years ago. In 1861, when Pennsylvania seceded from Unionism and formed its own system of government, Columbiana County became part of Westmoreland County and remained that way until 1971 when it entered into direct union with Allegheny County through the establishment of the Pittsburgh-Allegheny Boundary Commission Act which made Columbia an enclave within Allegheny County for all purposes including taxation and school district assignments. In 1982/1983 School District 5952 merged into School District 9764 effective January 1st 1983 Columbia would go through many changes during this time as well; starting out with a small population (just over 100 residents) while gradually growing throughout the 80s and 90s reaching over 1K residents by 2000 During this time also came many major improvements such as: a brand new high school opened in 2002; construction began on a $10 million dollar library/community center complex; installation of streetlights throughout town; completion of watermain replacement projects including* re-piping for both municipal water main *and constructing two new wells *and much more Since then things have slowly started to reverse themselves with less growth but increased activity due largely to recent economic opportunities brought about by global recession

In 1802, Columbia Township was organized and named for the town of Columbia, South Carolina. The first settler in the township was Abram Hahn. By 1818, there were six families living in Columbia Township. In 1819, a school was built in the township by Dr. John Fenton and Mrs. Margaret Hahn. In 1830, a post office was established in the township by Captain James Joicey and his family. From this post office, settlers received news of events happening in their restive neighbor to the north In 1835, Columbia Township had six families living as well as one school that taught children between 6-8 years old. A sawmill operated in the township from 1840-1845; it produced lumber for local buildings and also exported logs to Pennsylvania mills The population of Columbia Township peaked at 23 residents in 1850 but declined rapidly over time due to many factors such as westward migration (the Gold Rush began around this time), Indian attack on settlements near Harrisburg (1855), Civil War ( 1861-1865), gold rush fever (1868- 1870), industrialization ( 1888), and then decline during World War I (1914- 1918). After World War II ended there were few changes until 1960 when new residents moved into what is now known as Northumberland County
The first European settlers in what is now Columbia, Pennsylvania were the Swiss in 1724. The town of Columbia was chartered on February 14, 1786 by act of the General Assembly. On November 20, 1814, President James K. Polk declared a state of emergency for the purpose of providing protection to the citizens of Missouri during the Mexican-American War. On December 8, 1814, a force under Captain John C. Fremont traveled from Philadelphia through Lancaster County to advanced near Columbia on their way to Battle Creek and Clarksburg. The force encountered resistance from Native Americans and when they reached Columbia they found all but one man dead from gunshot wounds received during the engagement.
