In 1824, Colonel James Ketchum built what became Columbia Academy on land he had purchased from the Abenakis tribe. In 1831, Colesville Agricultural Company laid out Columbia Township on land east of present-day Columbia Elementary School. The company operated a large farm for many years until it merged with other agricultural companies in 1896 to become Penn Central Railroad's Columbiana Branch. The village ofColumbia grew up around the academy until after World War II when businesses moved away or were taken over by larger towns such as Wilkes-Barre or Scranton; however, much of the architecture still remains from earlier days including some Federal buildings (e.g., courthouse) that are still used today in nearby Scranton Township. The post office opened in 1886 and closed in 1978; however, mail continued to be delivered through private carriers until 1987 when Penn Central abolished all internal mail service due to budget cuts.. The last residents left Columbia Township on October 15th 1984 when Penn Central discontinued all passenger service within its own system effective October 16th 1984 citing low ridership rates It is now part of Scranton Township but retains its ZIP code of 18191 .

Columbia was founded in 1786 by Captain John Thomson and his Native American wife, Susannah Thomson. The town became a major center of trade in the region and grew rapidly thanks to its location at the junction of two important trails: the North Branch Susquehanna River andthe West Branch Susquehanna River. The townsite was also convenient for transportation due to its close proximity to both rivers. The town's growth led to development within Columbia itself, which began to attract more people and businesses over time. By 1820, Columbia had reached its peak as a commercial center with a population of around 250 people. However, during the years following the American Revolution, Columbia slowly declined as Trade restrictions increased on England. In 1829,Captain John Thomson died at age 63 leaving his sizable fortune behind in Columbia. This wealth allowed for new development within the town but also meant that it lost some of its importance as a commercial center after he passed away. This decline continued through the 19th century as other factors such as industry and population moved into newer settlements closer to Philadelphia or Pittsburgh. however, by 1910Columbia still had a population of around 100 people living in downtown buildings and 10 small farms spread across the community periphery. In 1965, when Pennsylvania became an all-Democratic state, Columbian politicians successfully lobbied for incorporation into the newly created Lancaster County government; this move helped preserve Columbia's role as an agricultural center east of Lancaster County while giving it more autonomy from county politics. Today, Columbia is home to about 50 residents who work in nearby industries or live on small farms near downtown where they enjoy access to city services including libraries, parks and schools
