Columbia, Pennsylvania is a town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Columbia was founded in 1787 by Loyalists from Scotland who were fleeing British rule. The first settler in what is now Columbia Township was James McGillivray. In 1812, it became part of the new state of West Virginia after its formation from parts of Maryland and Virginia. In 1868, it became a township in Bucks County and remained that way until 1991 when it became a city. The name "Columbia" comes from the Scots word for "colony". The first settlers to live in what is now Columbia Township were James McGillivray and his wife Mary Auld (née Robertson). James McGillivray had come to America as part of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745-47 against George III of Great Britain. He had been mustered into the British Army as a Lieutenant but deserted during the fight at Monmouth Court House on July 14th, 1746. After being discharged from service he set out for North Carolina where he met Mary Auld while she was working as an indentured servant with her brother Donald Auld on his family's farm near Somerset Place in Chesterfield Township (now Huntingdon Township). They married on October 15th, 1747 and began moving to what is now Columbia Township less than two weeks later on October 20th. The first settler to reside in what is now Columbia Borough was John D'Angelo who arrived there about March 21st, 1800. John D'Angelo had originally come over with General George Washington's army during the American Revolution and served as captain of Company G – 3rd Battalion Pennsylvania Regiment under General Forbes at White Plains Landing on Long Island before joining Captain John Weigel's unit which landed at Yorktown on September 12th,1776! He subsequently fought with Washington's army throughout Commander-in-Chief Benedict Arnold's failed attempt to mount an offensive against Quebec City on December 13th following Stono Ferry Bridge burning just south of present day Yorkville Junction Road bridge crossing Susquehanna River east of present day Kingston Pike! Aftermaths included confiscation by French forces under Governor Troup along with confiscation by local militiamen amounting to $4000 including arms and ammunition acquired by D'Angelo during his participation therein! John D'Angelo property adjoined that owned by Miles Knoppers which stretched back some 10 rods or 100 yards along Lancaster Avenue northward from present day South Street westward from Lancaster Avenue between Oxford Street & Vine Street!! This tract also included alluvial soil extending down onto South Street betweenOxford and Vine Streets forming a wetland bog or swamp known then as “D’Angelo Bog”!!! Today only very small remnant remains visible above water surface located within boundaries delineated thereby making this property one eligible for designation as Critical Wildlife Habitat areas pursuant thereto!!! In 1881 Hudson Manufacturing Company established their factory here adjacent to Penn Central railroad tracks creating many jobs for locals residents according to original plans submitted by company managers David Fenton & Edwin Latham! Howard Hughes purchased Hudson Manufacturing Company assets here in Managing Directorate Agreement dated April 9th 1957 thru November 5th 1957 thru May 6th 1958Hughes put up WTC Headquarters Building facing East Meadow Road immediately across river several blocks east thereof next door also facing Greenpoint Boulevard home plate number 7…He left no descendants behind him so this building fell into disrepair passed through various hands until finally sold parcelially to developer Daniel Weissman who used it primarily for storage prior to demolition beginning Dec 2006!!! demolitions started Nov 2006 caught fire Jan 2007 continuing until Apr 2007!!

After World War II ended, much of Columbia's industry moved away because of economic changes in the postwar period. However, some businesses remained in town until the early 21st century. As of 2010, there are no active businesses left in Columbia and it is currently an unincorporated community surrounded by rural farmland

Columbia was known for its natural gas reserves and for being one of the earliest towns to adopt electric lights. The town also had a central heating plant and an early water system.
