After the British took over the Dutch colony in 1664, they began to import firearms into Pennsylvania, which helped make Columbia one of the most gun-friendly states in America. In 1868, a state law was passed that made it illegal to sell or possess pistols without a license. This law allowed for more people to get access to handguns and gave people who wanted them more options available to them. The Gun Control Act of 1968 followed this law and made it illegal to buy or possess handguns without a license. This law also banned assault rifles and large calibers ammunition with serial numbers greater than 10 rounds per magazine.
Columbia is a small town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Columbia was founded by Captain James Clark in 1749 as a trading post on the Monongahela River. In 1814, it became an incorporated village and was named for Columbia College in Kentucky which had been founded by Increase Mifflin in 1795. In 1830, Columbia became the seat of Bucks County and was annexed to Philadelphia. In 1848, it reverted to its original name and became one of the first townships ofPhiladelphia when that city was organized. The township's boundaries were redrawn in 1902 after Act 581 (the Consolidated Township Act) merged parts of three other townships into this new township: Alexander Heights, Germantown and Cumberland Heights. Finally, portions of Columbian Township were added to Newton Area School District in 1996 following a referendum vote by the citizens thereof asking for such addition to their school system. In 2000-2001, Columbian Township celebrated its 400th anniversary with events including oral history interviews with residents from antiquity through present day; construction of an epic mural honoring local businesses and services from 1800-2000; plays/concerts featuring local artists; food concessions from various restaurants throughout town during "Everest" week; and finally fireworks displays over Washington Park on July 4th annually

Columbia was founded by the Pennsylvanian settlers in 1781. The township of Columbia was organized onOctober 24, 1834, and became a borough on May 1, 1868. The borough was named for the University of Pennsylvania, which had been founded in 1765. The town developed around the Columbian Exchange hotel and surrounding farms. In 1876, Columbia became the first municipality in Pennsylvania to adopt an ordinance granting voting rights to women. It also became one of only two municipalities in the United States with a city charter (the other being Newark, New Jersey). In 1902, Columbia voted to become an independent city separate from Philadelphia. On November 3 that year, it passed a charter that granted it full municipal autonomy and adopted a name change to "Columbia City." The city has since grown rapidly and now covers over 100 blocks within its limits. Today's Columbia is home to many cultural attractions; including two universities - Penn State University and Temple University - as well as several professional sports teams (including the Philadelphia 76ers), both NCAA Division I and II institutions as well as numerous small businesses and restaurants.
