Columbia is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,609 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Susquehanna River and is the county seat of Butler County. The first settler in Columbia was John Pugh in 1798. In 1805, James Wray founded what is now called Wraytown on land that he had purchased from the Native Americans. In 1815, Cornelius Vanderbilt bought much of this area and built his successful cotton plantation there known as Commodore Vanderbilt's Manor. Columbia became a borough in 1889 and a city in 1907. On July 1, 1920, it merged with neighboring town of Saint Clair to form a new municipality called Columbia-Saint Clair which has since been renamed Columbia Township in honor of its original namesake. Columbia is located at (40.045002,-75.823694). According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,521 people, 593 households, and 470 families residing in the township. The population density was 57 people per square mile (22/km²). There were 614 housing units at an average density of 26/sq mi (10/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 2% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. The area now known as Columbia, Pennsylvania was part of the Monongahela valley. The first Europeans to encounter the area were the Dutch in 1624 when they explored and charted the lower reaches of the Susquehanna River. The first permanent settler in this area was Captain James Penn, who built a trading post at what is now called Kittanning on the Susquehanna River in 1768. In 1821, Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a national bank in this region. The bank was founded by George Washington and his associates with assistance from John Dickinson and Alexander Hamilton. The town of Columbia was named for this institution. For many years, Columbia functioned as one of the leading banking centers in America. In 1865, however, it became embroiled in a financial dispute with Philadelphia-based First National Bank which resulted in its shutdown.Columbia also played an important role during World War I as a distribution center for munitions supplies sent downriver from points eastward.
