Columbia is located on UPPER CANAL STREET just east of I-75 exit 421A southbound on Mifflin Avenue between Neely Road (SR 7) eastbound on Canalside Drive NE and US 12 northbound. Columbia is a borough in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Germans in 1784 as Cornersville. It was renamed Columbia on October 20, 1827 after Columbian University in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1829, it became a part of Washington Township and remained so until 1861 when it became a part of Cumberland County. In 1892, Columbia acquired land southeast of the current town center from the heirs of John Dennison for $1 million dollars. This acquisition increased its size by over 100%. By 1912-14, construction had started on what would become what is now the town square which included the first church and schoolhouse in the area. A new courthouse was built in 1915 to replace an older one that had burned down several times previous. The square also served as home to many civic organizations including the Columbiana Club and later the Cambria Civic Association which helped promote arts and culture within Columbia during this time period. In 1929-30 new homes were built on much of what is now downtown Columbia with some deliveries taking place as early as 1928! These homes were done with Federal style architecture popularized by President Franklin D Roosevelt while he lived in Chicago during his first term as president beginning January 20th 1933 until March 3rd 1933 due to Executive Order 6382 issued February 15th 1930 prohibiting public buildings from being decorated with exteriors advertising products or services without specific permission from their respective owners/builders/ occupants Since incorporation into Borough form in 1984 (under law No 2-1984), there have been many updates/improvements made to our infrastructure such as: sidewalks & roadways; parks; water systems; lighting; etc., all funded through special assessments levied upon residents through property tax rates! The town was renamed for George Washington in 1802 and grew even more rapidly. In 1864, the city annexed parts of Reading Township. In the late 19th century, Columbia became known as one of the most important steel production towns in America due to its location at the center of a large steel industry. The city experienced significant growth during World War II with an increase in population from 10,000 to 50,000 residents. The war also led to increased manufacturing activity in Columbia and other nearby towns. After the war, Columbia reverted back to its smaller size as businesses died out or moved away and few new jobs were created. In recent years, however, Columbia has seen a resurgence with several new businesses opening up along with an increasing number of cultural events and attractions.
