The town's name is derived from two local rivers: the Susquehanna and Monongahela. In 1854, a millrace called Westminster Run ran through Columbia and became known as Westminster Creek. Today, this creek forms part of Pennsauken Township and parts of Clearfield Township. The early residents of Columbia were farmers and their families. For many years, Columbia was a small town with only a few homes and businesses. However, over time it grew into an important community with its own school system, churches (including one that still uses communion wine as Communion rites), business districts, and other civic interests. Today's Columbia has strong ties to both its Scottish-Irish origins and to Philadelphia – which has been its biggest city since 1795 when it became part of the United States of America – but also retains some traditions that date back to colonial times such as Shaolin Kung Fu training classes for seniors available at nightfall on weekdays! In recent decades Columbia has become an increasingly popular tourist destination due to its rich history and beautiful scenery. Columbia is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,754 at the 2010 census. The borough was founded in 1802 by Scots-Irish immigrants who named it after the Columbia River. Columbian Presbyterian Church and School are located in town. The first Europeans to visit what is now Columbia were Native Americans who followed the Susquehannock River upstream from where it empties into Pennsylvanian Lake Erie. In 1724 French traders explored the area and found a body of water that they called "the Great Columbia" because of its great Size. They called all of the rivers on this side of the Allegheny Mountains "the Little Columbia." In 1800, seven Scottish immigrants established a trading post on what is now Main Street in town. The name Columbia was chosen for its resemblance to the river that they had seen downstream from their post. In 1802, when settlers began moving into this area from surrounding counties, they named their new townships after places near them such as Lancaster and Yorktown Heights. Columbia Township was organized on May 15, 1802 under act of Congress entitled "An Act for organizing township meetings." It included land east of State Road No 3 (now Lebanon Pike) and west of State Road No 2 (now Center Avenue). There were only fifty-six residents living inColumbia when it first formed but within two years there were over one hundred property owners in town limits alone! At first, farming prevailed as most people grew crops or raised animals for their own use rather than selling goods or services to others. However, with increased trade across state lines came increasing opportunities for both men and women to make money beyond farm work through local retail businesses or banking interests which evolved into today’s thriving community banks! One early business venture undertaken by these women was running a gift shop anchored by an original gristmill on Center Street! This mill operated until 1865 when it burned down due to arson!. In later years anothercommerce storefront replaced it; however this one closed up shop several times during various economic downturns throughout the 2000s before finally being vacated around 2006! A few resident still enjoy going shopping at local boutiques during summertime! Over time many different types of businesses have cropped up including: restaurants/cafes/bars/locksmiths etc., making life very busy indeed inside & outside of our small town core….. Today we celebrate numerous events each year marking our history including Pioneer Day On July 4th & Heritage Day October 10th both celebrated annually
