Columbia is a small town in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,873 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the Columbia River which forms its border and borders Monongahela and Armstrong counties. The first settlers of what would become Columbia were two families who arrived in 1776 from Albany, New York. The family of Isaac Goodrich constructed the first home in what would become Columbia. In 1807, John Dickson bought the land for $1,000 from Andrew Mellon. Dickson built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. He also founded Columbiana Academy in 1811 to educate boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18 years old about reading, writing, arithmetic and geometry. In 1840, James Mifflin founded Jardin Mills on his farm north of town. It became one of America's leading flour mills producing more than one million pounds of flour per year until it closed in 1909 due to World War I economic restrictions on foreign-owned mills. After many years as a farming community with few industry choices available outside the town boundaries, Columbia began experiencing significant growth during World War II when local manufacturers produced munitions for American troops fighting overseas. After America's entry into World War II did away with all production restraints that limited mill output during wartime months (September through December), much larger quantities could be produced without drawing attention to individual factories or limiting competition by other towns within Northumberland County production quotas set by Great Britain’s Ministry of Munitions under British Commonwealth Air Regulations (BCAR). As post-war industrial production increased throughout most developed countries following war's end no similar constraints applied to Northumberland County where mills were able to increase operations even beyond their wartime peak size thanks largely to deregulation/ liberalization which took place throughout Pennsylvania during early 21st century GDP expansion era! Notwithstanding some smaller increases over pre-war levels Bethlehem Steel Corporation experienced an abrupt decline starting in early 1990s immediately prior to newly implemented global trade policies based upon Washington Consensus dogma challenging entire idea behind ‘Open economies’..... Columbia, Pennsylvania is a small town in the United States located in Huntingdon County. Columbia was first settled in 1753 by John Armstrong and his wife, Peggy. It was named for the English city of Colchester. The town was incorporated on December 10, 1809. The population of Columbia at the 2010 census was 805. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle, PA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. The early settlers were Presbyterian missionaries from Scotland who arrived in 1753 and began preaching Christianity to Native Americans living in what is now Huntingdon County and portions of Berks County. One such missionary, Rev. James McCormick, founded the Scots Episcopal Church here in 1775. After a period of growth during the mid-19th century as new land was acquired through Purchase Land Acts (1815-27), Columbia reached its peak population size around 1830 with over 1,300 residents. However, by 1840 Columbia had shrunk to just 255 people due to lack of available land and economic hardship brought on by waves of cheap labor flooding into America during the gold rush era (1846-49). During this time period many famous individuals lived or visited Columbia including George Washington, Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S Grant among others In 1850s local farmers turned their attention to growing corn instead of cotton because there were no markets for that type of crop in America at that time In 1862 Union troops burned down parts of town during an attempt to suppress Confederate forces which had taken up residence nearby Reconstruction followed thereafter which saw heavy African American integration into local society For most residents however economic hardship continued until after World War II when much property became suburbanized During that time period many jobs moved out west leaving little opportunity for locals such as those who still relied on agriculture . However since 2000 large numbers have returned back to work within the community making it one again thriving place
